Okay i have the stock 2.73's and i want to swap them out to a 3.XX. I want to be able to maintain good gas mileage. I heard 3.73 are the way to go, but what do you guys think with my current mods in sig? I do a lot of freeway driving. Also how much do you think it will run cost wise to do this swap?

well, i have 3.73's in my A4, i love them...but i dont take my car onthe highyway too much. At 70 im turning about 2700 RPMS. I didnt see but about 1-2 mpg drop, one i got used to the feel and kept my foot out of it. Well its hard to say how much it would cost, depending on what brand gear you get and type or rebuild kit and the shop doing it. But all in all its a good choice. if not the 3.73's try the 3.42's for highway cars

You can maintain some decent highway mileage with 3.73s, I have them and take my car on some decent trips sometimes. As for the cost, not sure what the going rate would be for it but I know it isnt cheap (unless you have a friend that you can REALLY trust that know what he is doing).

3.73's are the most common gear put in autos for a reason. They're a great mod.


Some shops will charge a lot for installing gears, so the cost depends on that. I've heard people paying upwards of 500 dollars for an install.

Yes, it does. I have seen anywhere between $200-800 depending on where you take it. Of course I just do it myself, that helps too

yeah well its a toss up between 3.42's and 3.73's but i am leaning more toward the 3.73 side of it. Sounds like most of you love those 3.73 gears!!! How much do you think it will help on my track times if i go with 3.73's?

I went with 3.42's in my auto with a 3500 stall and still got ok mpg. Just buy the install kit and do it your self took me about 5hrs the first time, now it doesn't take to long.

The 3.42.s was one of my first major mods over a year ago, it gave me 25.3% more RPM per MPH and woke up the car significantly. It's a street car so it works good for me, no regrets with the decision. The 3.73's will give you 36.6% more RPM. The choice should be based on what your expectations and what end result you want to meet. Peppy DD street car, street racer, strip, etc. I always do all my own work, but with no previous gear replacement experience an w/o proper tools (gauges), reading up on it scared me away. It cost $600.00 for the parts & labor to have the work done, probably a good decision. It took the darn shop (who said they did dozens of these) 3 tries spread over three days to get rid of acceleration and/or deceleration wine, they probably lost money on that job.

yeah i was looking for some drag radials for the last couple of days. i am taking my car to Sacramento Raceway tomorrow night to see what she runs now that i have gotten the tranny rebuilt with a shift kit. before it was slipping bad from 2-3 gear. yeah i think i will go with 3.73's and have a shop install them. Maybe Advanced Dyno!! let me call robert and get a qoute!

I am here to agree with everyone else, I put 3:73's in my A4 car, and I love them. Dont go 3:42's, just go with the 3:73's.

My friend had 3.73's in his M6 and he loved them.....i raced him on the freeway and he pulled past me hard but i heard that most M6 go with 4.10's but i could be wrong!!!

Yeah, most M6 cars go with 4.10s (or 3.89s I think it was that the_merv went with, which I think is the best combo). But its all about preferance, 3.73s mean better gas mileage on the highway (not by much though) but those 4.10s/4.11s are going to pull alot harder.

You already have 3.42's stock. I've got 3.73's in my M6 and love them. I kind of wish that I had 4.10's, or maybe 3.90's though, since I don't do a whole lot of highway driving. If you're going to get any gears for it, just make sure you get some DR's. Even on a pretty good set of 275 street tires, my car still would roast them off through 2nd, and that's with just a few minor bolt-ons and the 3.73's.

Currently have my stock 95 z28 and i want to change the gear ratio to some 3.73s but i'm not sure where to buy them, does anybody know a good site or link so i can buy it?
