Default 52mm or 58mm TB?

I'm looking to getting a throttle body while i'm doing all the upgrading.

1-Will i need a gasket kit for it? I saw that they sell them..I guess i just never thought about that.

2-Would 58mm be over kill on a h/c/i car?

3-Do you guys recommend any certain brands?

That should keep you busy for a bit.

And to save you asking, yes you need a gasket, and just get a standard one and cut it bigger.

Until someone, some day does back to back dyno pulls with both TB's, this question will never be answered.

Very true. I personally don't follow how a bigger TB can cause the motor to have too much air or cause turbulence -_- Unless you're running force induction and putting in more air than the injectors can handle. I don't think a 58mm will be so big it'll cause problems. It'll be over-kill sure, but not something to rob power.

Then again I'm not a physicist or mathematician. So I can't calculate how something like that can rob power.

I asked my Crazy 8-Ball:
Will the 58mm TB make more power than the 52mm TB? It replied "You can rely on it".

So there you go.

Assuming you've ported the intake to 58mm.

One guy didn't, and actually had gains. I was surprised by that.

I'm running a 52mm TB and spending $300 to $400 for a 58mm is not going to give me another half a second off my time, in which I'm shooting for next time out. IMO, 52mm is plenty big for where I'm at.

Not quite the question we're dealing with Since they both cost the same price, if you're going from stock (48mm), which is better. That's essentially the question being asked (almost every damn time :\)

^ My bad, I forget that the stock is 48mm. I've had my original openned up to a 52mm for the longest time and thinking 52mm is stock size. Anyways, 52mm is plenty big.

Indeed, in most cases it probably is just fine.

There is also 54mm now as well, but those I think are only available on eBay (anyone have a sponsor maybe that does it?). They're nice since the stock size of the intake is 54mm

AS&M used to make a trick billet 54mm TB, but not sure if they still do or if it was discontinued.

What upgrading are you doing? The stock throttle body is not a restriction unless you are making a bunch of HP. Lot's of low ten second NlA LT1's out there running the stock TB. I have yet to see anyone post a true back to back test that showed any gains on average combinations.

(Just trying to save you a few bucks)

Giz is right, you don't technically need one till around 450hp. There is a noticable change in throttle response with a larger TB though, as well as better/bigger injectors (even if they aren't really needed yet). Even before my tune for them, when I went to the 24# SVO's from my stock 22# (SVO had like 45K on them or so), I noticed a change in response and a bit more pick up.

Basically there's better things to spend $300 on right now, like headers. Unless you get a bored stocker off eBay for around $140.

One thing everyone is forgetting is airspeed. The air will travel slower through a 58mm throttle body than a smaller one. Heck a monoblade is better yet.

The slower the air is traveling the better it is able to make the turns into the ports. The faster it is going it wants to head to the back of the plenum. So the front ports will be some what starved for air while the back ports will have more air.

So buy the biggest one you can afford. I'm running the AS&M monoblade my self. I started out with the stock 48mm, had it bored to 52mm, than a 58mm and finally the 1300cfm monoblade. I have had zero driveability problems with any of them.

I wouldn't say air will travel slower through a 58 than a smaller one. I would think at certain points in the rpms it would, but not always. I would think it also more important the volume of air you are getting in there, as opposed to air speed/velocity. They do sorda coincide though. Sorry for I'm just a newbie though
