Default MAF question?

I know this is probaly an easy answer but I dont know it. So ive seen a few MAF sensors moved further away from the TB. What is the purpose of that? or is there one?

well there are two reasons...one is for a cleaner unclutered look and then there is the heat soak reason. being moved away from the engine it will read a little more accurate and read the air a little cooler, since the MAF wont be heated up being so close to the motor.I dont know what the actual power benefits tho..if any..

I forgot the MAF doubles as a IAT (at least I think it does...). The benefit of reading more closely the real intake air temp, would be better performance due to lack of timing retard for the hotter air the computer thinks the engine is getting.

If I'm wrong (easily possible, as I don't know much about the MAF other than general knowledge), then I'd go for the 'cleaner' air flow idea, and then move the IAT out of the elbow yourself, and put it down closer to the filter. You'll need to extend the wiring if you do, and if you do, don't be stupid and crimp the wires. Solder them, and if you can't solder due to skill or lack of tools, then get some heat shrink. Remove a fair amount of the wire sheathing (plastic cover) and then with the wires facing each other, twist them together. Not twist them like a twist tie on a loaf of bread, but make it so they're still a straight line. Make sure the heat shrink is on the wire FIRST heh Then put that over the twisted part and shrink it down. Since the wire isn't something that gets yanked on, it'll hold fine and the heatsink will keep from corrosion and untwisting.

There's a better way to twist it, but short of a video, it'd be nigh impossible to explain lol

I wouldn't say it doubles as an IAT (it's not far off base either), but it calculates air flow using change in temperature basically. I'm pretty sure LT1 style is a hot-wire style, so I don't see heat soak being an issue, but I could be wrong.

Ah, well then I'd relocate both closer to the air filter (Some mount the air filter directly to the MAF I've seen)

if you dont have the stock screen in the maf i wouldnt put the filter right off the maf.sometimes the airflow threw the filter will throw the maf off plus if you have it mounted low you could have a chance of getting moisture on the maf...i have been there done that lol but it depends on the location as far as moisture goes. just my 2 cents

Yea, I'd leave the stock screen in, since there's been tests showing removing it doesn't help.
