Default HELP me prevent 2-3 mis-shifts! Tranny came down 3 times!!!

Ok Im either a very bad driver or my car stock hurst shifter sucks. I dont think Im honestly terrible in driving but I am sure learning my lesson after mis-shifting for the 4th time.

My tranny came down, throw out bearings got replaced, synchros got replaced and now after my last mis-shift transmission started to mess up big time.

i was driving in 5th gear today at about 63 mph and I heard a LOUD "thunk" like my rear diff. started shaking mad in the highway. I pulled over as quick as I can to the side of the highway, put the shifter in neutral position and barely started taking my foot of the clutch. But as soon as I did that the car started moving like it was in gear so I stepped on the clutch again. Then I double checked my shifter position and it was in neutral I moved it left and right to make sure but everytime I started letting go of the clutch pedal it seemed like the car was stuck in gear because it was trying to move

I couldnt do anything but turn the car off and leave the tires locked in position. Called the road side assistance and he towed it to the dealership and he managed to get the gear in neutral by luck.

I am getting sick of the mis-shifting and it has to stop . I know driver error is a big percentage of mis shifting but help me reduce that Please.

Whats the best shifter ever built. Ill pay as much as $400 for one just please dont let me mess my tranny up again.

Wish there was a shifter that actually guarantees no mis-shifts as it would be a wet dream to me right now.

HEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!

PRO 5.0 is the best shifter I know of. I used to miss 3rd with the stock shifter (not Hurst, but now I never miss 3rd or any other gear. The B&M Ripper is also good from what I've read, but I've never used it.

How about the LSS (lous short stick)?
Is that just as good?

If the pro 5.0 is better (with or without the LSS)let me know and ill buy one right away.

I am not going to go the cheaper way out of this and regret it later. Tranny must not come down again

Your problem with the tranny IS a tranny problem, not a shifter problem.

If you personally miss shifts it's most likely your driving.A hurst works like a Pro 5.0.

Slowhawk thanks for the response. I just got a phonecall from the dealership saying they will put a new transmission in (under warranty ofcourse) which is very good news to me.

BTW you have a very fast car. 120Mph is as fast as a Porsche 911 twin turbo in the 1/4 mile. Congrats on the setup. What kind of tires did you use on that run?

Back to the subject, would you think the pro 5.0 would "help" me stop mis-shifting? I know its mostly driver error but it has to help out a little bit since its a straight stick with no rubber isolator right?

hmmm i wish there was a way to make the "skip ****" light to work on higher rpms to make me stop mis-shifting. Just like how it locks me out of 2nd gear and forces me to shift from 1st to 4th isnt there a way to have it to lock me out 1st gear to make sure the only way im going in 2nd gear is 3rd or 5th? (lets say we make the light come on in High Rpms in 2nd gear to be exact)

hope i get another answer to this or ill have to do a new post. or should I do it in the electronic section?

I really like my Pro 5.0, it will prolly help ya. Just be sure to get used to it before ya really start banging gears, and dont try powershifting. It also has adjustable stops to help save the shift forks.

I run the PRO 5.0 and love it but a good fix for the hurst is to ditch the stock handle(rubber) and run a LOU's shortstick. It feels just like a PRO 5.0.Shifting takes practise to not miss gears.Sometimes even your seating position can affect your shifting.

As for my times I run ET streets.10.5 on 16 inch rims.I'm going to the track this Sunday with full slicks,so my ET should drop 4-5 tenths.

hey I dont know if this is BS but I've had HELLA probs with my tranny and the "Mystery gear" between 3rd and 4th anyways after having it apart twice to fix they are replacing it. The service manager had them order one and checked the serial number against some build date data to make sure it was built after July of 2002. SUPPOSIVELY all T56's built after that time have upgraded Steel shift forks (two of the them not just the 3-4) and the blockers on the syncros are like the vipers and some other upgraded parts. I'm no expert so no flames please the dealer might be blowing smoke up my *** although they did ask me to come down to check the serial number on my tranny...... Might be worth getting more info on I think the dealer reference a T56 tech from gm Keith black or Blackstone or something who was making sure the tranny was the newer one before shipping it out....

A good shifter will help you, but you need to practice your shifting. Skill is more important then the shifter. You need to have correct hand positioning to get good shifts. I turn my hand upside down with my thumb pointing towards the pass. door for my 4th gear shift.

Me too.
I completed my first 1-2-3 powershifting the other day. Must say, I'm pretty excited. Only took me about 7 months to get it right.

As for shifters I favor the Pro 5.0 by a good margin over a Hurst because the Hurst is a little mushy and sits too high IMO.

Slowhawk makes a good point with a better stick w/o rubber thats a little shorter the Hurst would probably be just fine.

I just switched from my stock z28 shifter to the hurst one and I missed a couple of shifts at first but I got accustomed to it and am not missing any shifts, I bet you could practice enough and not miss that many shifts, like riding a bicycle once you get used to it you'll do it the same everytime.

I hit that mystery gear you speak of before but it had nothing to do with the tranny. There is a little plastic cup that sits between the shifter linkage and the bottom part of your shifter to keep the metal from the bottom of your shifter from having metal to metal contact against the shifter linkage.

The dealership while fixing synchros way back in the day forgot to put this plastic cup back in the linkage, so the shifter ate away at the linkage, which caused the stick to come out of the linkage when I made hard shifts and the car would go into a mystery gear. The stick would look as if it's in gear, but the bottom of it just overtravelled and came out of the linkage, so the linkage never moved and you never shifted to the next gear.
