Default Dot 5 BF can't be mixed with dot 3?

Hey guys,
Am replacing the slave cylinder and need to bleed the system again. Wanted to use dot5 Brake fluid this time to prevent boiling. The system currently has dot3 and the guy at auto zone says that you can't mix them.

this is fine, I will just drain the dot3 from the system. However, the new slave cylinder comes pre-bled (I am assuming with dot3). Will this be an issue. Do I need to pre-bleed it again and replace with dot5?

Thanks

IIRC, DOT5 is not compatible with DOT3/4 systems nor fluids; don't use it. DOT5.1 is compatible with DOT3/4 systems and should not cause any problems when mixing fluids.

The boiling point increases with each level (so the boiling point for DOT3 < 4 < 5.1), but as the fluid absorbs more water, the boiling point decreases.

I am using ATE Superblue (DOT5.1). I don't know if any DOT5.1 fluids are sold in regular parts stores; I bought some from Strano (sponsor) a couple of years ago and had it around when I did my transmission swap.

If you are beating on the car a lot, you can buy the DOT4/5.1 for "added security." Ideally, you are changing the fluid regularly so you should be fine with DOT3/4. Go with whatever is easily available unless you have reason not to.

Thanks, I will return the Dot 5 for some Dot4. I will see about getting some dot5.1 eventually, but gotta get this baby moving!

I 3rd or 4th this statement. DOT5 is a no no. If you're worried about heat, wrap the line w/ some 5/8" or 1" intake hose (cheap heat resistance). Don't see why anyone would need more than DOT 3 while using an insulated line. I drive hard on road courses & use DOT3 w/hose over hose as an insulator. Good-luck

Use the cheap auto parts store brand DOT 3. It will stay clear for years.

What the hell do you need dot 5 for? Thats mainly used when your storing a car for a long time, not racing. I race my car and still have dot 3, I've only come close to completely boiling it once, Im thinking of going to dot 4 but thats it, and you know you have to replace your brake lines if you go higher than dot 3 with stainless steel lines. Cause if you go with dot4 or higher, and you get it hot, the fluid wont boil but your brake lines will expand, which is probably worse
