Exclamation How to align shift forks and rails to inset guide pin for t56

I am in the process of rebuilding my t56 and and can't the forks and rails to line up so I can inert the guide pin. The main case goes on no problem. I can get one guide pin as well. The one I am having trouble with is the guide pin that I asume keeps the 1-2, 3-4 forks in line. I checked the treads, the pin goes in easy when the case is by itself.

I have done this at least 10 tens and can't get it to work.

Any little tricks or am I doing something wrong?

I always put the pin in the main rail first, then lift up on the 5/6/reverse rail a little and put that pin in. There's definitely a trick to it, hard to explain.

How are the forks supposed to sit on the guide plate on the main shift rail?

Even if I try to do the main pin first it won't go in. The other pin always goes right in.

Here is how I do it. First put the case on and hold it with few bolts. Lay the trans on its side so the hole is on the top. Use a small light to make sure the guide is right under the hole. If the guide is off a little, try using a small screw driver to move it to center. I clean all the threadlock off the bolt and use my hand to install it so I don't force it in. When I have both sides in I remove one and apply the threadlock on the 1-2;3-4 and do the same one the other (5-6; reverse). Good luck!

That is the same thing I do. I have always had to lay the trans down.

OP, have you ever built a transmission before? I'm thinking of giving this a shot too.

No. This is my first time. It was going really smoothly until I tried to align the shift rails with the guide pins.

I still can't get it to work. I must be doing something wrong. The 5-6 rail pin guides in a vertical direction while the 1-2,3-4 rail pin guides in a horizontal direction. Now when I look through the guide pin whole I can that the guide plate groove is not centered with the hole. I tried the methods above to get it to shift but it is not working. I am wondering if I have the guide plate on the rail in right orientation.

Any more ideas?

There is a definite trick to it... Once you figure it out you are home free.

Here's the T-56 service manual in case you don't have it.
http://www.lastofthebreed.com/Servic...viceManual.pdf

1.) You want to have the transmission in neutral.

2.) Page 37 figure 4-1 shows the orientation of the shiftpin vs the 1/2 and 3/4 shift links. The picture in figure 4-1 leads you to beleive the shift pin is to be located on the outside of the 1/2 shift link. In reality the shift pin should be sandwiched in between the 1/2 and 3/4 shift links.

READ THIS AND UNDERSTAND.
3.) Page 38 section 4-2 "Transmission Case" ... The most important part pertaining to our subject at hand.

One this website is a couple pictures that sort of show the orientation of the shiftlinks and shift pin.

Let us know if you have anymore questions.

Thanks for posting some great info. The pics really showed what i was looking for. I had the pin postioned the way it was shwon in the manual. I hope postioning the pin correctly with using the 'trick' mentioned above I will see success. I will give it a shot tonight and post results.

Thanks again.

Always glad to help. Let us know if you have any questions.

What jmm98LS1 said, falls right in line with what's needed for a successful case install.

Good news. I got the main case back on. There is definitely a trick to it.

However I do have yet another question. Now that I have the trans at this stage I can shift 1-6 but not R. Is this because the R components are not yet together? Or do I have to pull the case back off and reset the forks?

Thanks

Yes there is a trick to it. It's pretty easy once you figure it out... It sounds like you got it !

If you are able to shift in all other gears, it sounds like you've got it.

To get your tranny to shift in reverse, it sounds like you answered your own question.

Even with the reverse components in place you will have to sort of hold the reverse shiftfork and rail towards the reverse syncronizer assembly... as if you have the tail housing on the trans allready.

The same thing goes when you are installing your tailhousing, you will have to push the 5th/6th/reverse shift rail with a screw driver so it fall into the hole on the tail housing.

You don't want to force the tail housing on, once you get everything lined up it should slide on real easy not sleazy.

Good deal. I really did not want to pull the main case off again. Once I finish setting the the preload on the counter shaft extension I will button the whole thing up. If my schedule isn't too bad this week the car trans will go back in the car.

As always I appreciate the help.

Setting preload-endplay is good. Getting everything in spec will give
you a smoother shift and longevity.
