Default M6 5th gear grind.

Hey all, so the other day I was driving to class and when I shifted into 5th gear it made a grinding noise but still went in gear with no force at all. Ever since that day it'll grind when i shift to 5th unless I push the clutch in for a few seconds, let the rpm's drop, and then try shifting into 5th gear, and it goes in with no grind at all.

What could be my problem? From reading around the internet, it sounds like it could be my 5-6 synchro? Am I correct? Thanks in advance!

I was having the same issue after changing to MobilOne Syn ATF. I dumped the M1 ATF and refilled with Dexron III and problem is gone.

It could be a number of things. A worn blocking ring, broken key, worn fork pads or a bent fork. All are fairly simple to fix. While you are in there I would recommend doing a refresh on the whole trans. Let me know if you need anything or have any questions. Id be happy to answer them.

Thanks for the replies, I will first try replacing the fluid cause I am not sure of what fluid is in there right now.

Jeremy, I've never really worked on transmissions or anything so my question is, how big of a task would it be to refresh the whole trans? Also, how much is the average cost for all the parts? I'm a poor college student so im definitely on a budget haha.

Theres an excellent write up in the stickied treads torkls1, im looking at doing this same project over the winter break and have never been inside a manual transmission either, not in a car anyway. Check out the service manual for tremec t65 too and if your still feeling intrepid then go for it!

torkls1, Do you have 4.10 gears? A guy I work with has bad 5th sychros and 4.10s. I have a theory that the 5th gear sychros wear out quicker from hitting 5th at high rpm when hammering on it with 4.10s vs 3.42s.

Thanks Brians602 I will have to check that out.

Guppymech I still have the stock 3.42s but I would have to agree with your theory about the 4.10s for sure.

Something to add to the 5th gear grind issue I am having is that it seems once my car is warmed up and I have driven it around for a bit, it doesn't grind when i shift into 5th gear. What the heck?

Thanks, I'm hoping it's just a synchro.

You probably need a new 5/6 synchro assembly, and possibly the gear itself. It's usually never "just a synchro" Replace the 5/6/R rings regardless, and the shift fork pads.
The good thing is that you only have to remove the tailhousing to access 5/6/R. If you just want to fix the grind, then it's going to be under $300 for all the parts, worst case.

$300 not too shabby, I just gotta start saving up again after I just got done buying all the goods I'm gonna be putting on my car this winter lol.

I wouldnt get to bent out of shape yet, its 5th . If it were 3/4th then yeah. Try the fluid change you can also add a BG product called MSC or Multi -gear concentrate ,about 10 bucks a bottle. It worked great for me til I could rebuild my tranny.

If you keep shifting a gear that is grinding you will damage the engagement "teeth" on the synchro assembly and the gear. Both of those parts cost ~ $100 in addition to the new blocker rings for that synchro. Do not continue to shift into a gear that is grinding.

I too am having this problem.. not sure what my problem is.. Its almost as if my shifter cant move far enough forward to get it all the way into 5th gear. Sometimes no grind at all, but must hold shifter all the way forward til clutch is released...otherwise it will POP out of gear.. As im holding shifter forward, I release the clutch pedal and I feel a little pop as it pulls it all the way into gear.
