Default Frustrated and Embarrassed... Can't get my T56 in!

So I swapped the clutch in my 99 Formula and have the bell housing on the trans itself is all but a half inch or so from being ready to bolt in.

Is there a trick to getting it in there easier or a trick I can do?

I'm frustrated and embarrassed because back in the day I've done a clutch job in 2-ish hours... and now I'm on day 3, getting old stinks.

It's probably due to clutch alignment - the plastic tools are mediocre at best.

The RAM steel tool is nice and the trans has almost jumped off the trans jack everytime I've used it.

The guide posts on mine needed to be cleaned. A Dremel wire wheel did the trick and it slid in much more easily.

When you say that you a 1/2" away, do you mean there is a 1/2" gap between the bell housing and trans on the whole perimeter? If so the input shaft is already started into the pilot bearing and just needs more wiggling. :-) Lots more.

I know when I did mine, I put the bellhousing on the motor, then put the transmission in. I left it in 4th gear, put the yoke on the rear and turned it till the splines aligned.

As for the plastic tool, I used one with my twin disc, but I did make sure it was parallel, then snugged a couple bolts and made sure the tool moved very loosely in and out. Took all of 5 minutes to align and install it. For that last 1/2" I used a clamp to draw them together.

I had the same issue with the pins. I had to sand them clean and the tranny went in no problem. hope you figure it out.

I may try the clamp method. The bell housing is in the engine and the trans is 1/2 inch from being against it, I guess I just need to attack it better. Pity now that I have a herniates disc in my back I don't have the oomph I used too lol.

i ran into this same exact issue, and i knew forsure the clutch was lineed up,
i wound up gradually tightening each side to suck the trans in just like you'd
clamp it. never have had a problem.

Be careful with the clamp, if you notice the one I used has plastic fingers, so it can not pull to hard as to do damage.

It should not take too much pressure to go in.

Sorry to hear about the back injury, I had the same 21 years ago and had surgery, it has been pretty good since, but never as good as it was.

Good luck!

you really don't wat to "pull" the tranny in by using bolts. That can FU the disc spline and/or pilot bearing/bushing.

It was the blasted pins being rusted! I sanded them a bit and with a little finesse it's in! All that is left is bleeding. Thanks for the help!
