T56 oil
I know this has been covered millions of times. I've ran Royal Purple max ATF for the length that i have owned the car. It was good no problems. I ended up doing a rebuild because i tore all of the teeth off of 2nd speed gear. Put the tranny all back together and filled it up with 4 qts of RP max ATF again it is currently winter here in NY and about 30 degrees. It has been fighting me to get it into gear sometimes. You get so many different answers when you ask this question. "What oil to run in my T56?" I called Rockland Standard gear which is a local big transmission shop near me they recommend GM synchromesh. I then called tremec and said that i wanted a oil for a street car that i want to last. Its not a ***** to the walls race car but it does get abused. He recommended Mobil 1 Syn ATF. I then proceeded to ask him why we could not run gear oil(75-80 Thick weight oils) there was a long pause on the other side of the phone. He then replied with it can deteriorate the blocker rings. I said thank you and hung up the phone. Then thought thats the same exact thing people on this forum say about RP max ATF. I just want to solve this mystery. Why can i not run gear oil in my GEARbox ? I've ran gear oil in all the old super t10s with my father. I know there not the same. BUT there pretty damn close. I dont want any answers saying "because that's what the manual recommends". I want to know specifically what ATF does that gear oil cannot do. That makes it that much better. Because in my eyes a thicker oil would make shifts so much smoother it might be a little rough when its cold out until it warms up. And what fluid i should run.

Mike

you cannot run any gear oil in the t56 because the paper or carbon material on the blocker rings will not work with it. being that you now have carbon blockers you should be able to run most synthetic atf and all other dino atf. I've heard mixed reviews on mobil 1 but I have never tried it. I have tried normal mobil atf pennzoil synchromesh and redline d4 atf.
out of all of them the redline has shifted the best. synchromesh doesnt like the extreme cold but it did shift well warm. the mobil was notchy until it got warm then smoothed out. redline has been the best it shifts smooth when cold and when warm, i like it.

I'm debating between Dex III or an equivalent, or Mobil 1 ATF only saying this because it does get driving often. More opinions please. What will be okay in both warm and cold conditions. In new york it gets pretty cold.

when I asked D&D when I got my T56 they advised "synthetic" fluids, in the long run, are not compatable with the material used in STOCK blocker rings. Dexron 3 is what the manufacturer specs.
I just use NAPA brand Dex 3.
can you use synthetic, yeah but it may have a degradeing effect on the materials used in blocker rings. I did use Redline D4 and cold shifts were better. After swaping back to Dex 3, no real noticeable diffrece in cold shifts.
My $02 is just run a Dexron 3 equlivant on a stock T56. if you have a "built" one with blocker rings made from other materials not effected by synthetics and the shop advises another fluid, fine.

I literally JUST completed a Monster stage 2 install with their lightweight flywheel and a Tick master... Anyways, after fighting the ******* trans to get that "last 1/2" gap" closed I'm glad I found this thread. Stock trans, sort of.
Found out I have a re manufactured t56 from Jasper's that was done in 2006. Damn thing shifts like BUTTER and want to keep it that way. A place that specializes in core rebuilds I doubt would go the extra mile with carbon blocker rings and what not.
Looks like it'll be regular Dex 3 for me as well.
Gents, for those running regular Dex 3, does anyone have a brand recommendation? I'm thinking the stuff they sell at Wal-Mart....
