Default Installed Hurst Billet shifter.. Now have Rattle noise.

Like title said,,, I just installed a Hurst Billet Shifter and now it has a rattle noise. What's Up? Is it the ball joint going into the tranny? Does it need Grease? I re-used the rubber boot and made sure everything was tight. So, Can it be fixed or do I just turn up the radio?

Thanks
Christian

The aftermarket shifters do let a lot more noise through.

I have had factory, factory hurst ,pro 5 and hurst billet. The pro 5 was terrible for rattle and didn't even feel good after a few thousand miles.it kinda got sloppy feeling.
The hurst billet is precise but its a bit noisy.I put rubber between upper and lower stick ,it helped a bit but still noisy wot.I am thinking of trying a ripper since the new ones are one piece hear they are precise and quiet. That would be nice.Any of your ripper guys care to tell me if it rattles at wot.
Other wise I might try a slp short shifter with stock stick and hurts ****.I hate rattling shifters.!!

I get a little noise at very low rpm, like when just starting out, nothing after that (at least nothing that gets over the exhaust noise.

I think you should pull it off and sell it to me immediatley. I'll even trade you my Hurst Competition Plus and some cash so you'll still have a Hurst. Whaddaya say?

I feel your pain. I just put in an SLP short throw on my 98Z and it rattles some, too. Mine starts about 2500 rpm under a load like about 2/3 throttle or more, unless I"m holding the stick. I kept the stock stick. I'm going to gripe at SLP this week about it and see what they say. Are you old enough to remember the aftermarket shifters on the older trans that used llinkages? The high performance shifters always seemed to rattle compared to the factory shifters. I think it is beacuse of the leverage that makes it a short throw also works against the shifter for vibration and noise.

if its the entire shifter and not just the stick try running some rtv sealant between the shifter and the tranny, I bet this will help you out alot.

I belive it's the fact that aftermarket shifters do not have the rubber dampers/ grommets in them that stock shifters do. The now solid metal couplings conduct sound much better than the rubber did= more sound.

If you can hear the shifter Rattle , Your Exhaust aint loud enough.

Actually
when you installed it was the Plastic insert still in the Cup in the tranny?

Go to Pepboys and buy a roll of gasket making material, cut out a gasket for the bottom of your shifter by using your stock shifter as a template. Put the gasket that you cut out between the gear box and your shifter, this should quiet down your shifter a lot. Also cut out a piece so it can go between the shifter stick and the shifter itself and this should cut down the rattling at WOT.
