Default My car keeps eating a4's should convert to m6?

I'm weighing my options here. I'm about to be on my 9th 4l60e that has "bulletproof" internals. It won't stop burning clutches and I'm about to give up on it.

I'm looking into a different transmission altogether. Possibly a 4l80-E or a m6 t-56.

I would be surprised if I were making more than 430 hp with my set up at the flywheel. What would be my best option in terms of price and ease of conversion?

Thanks guy!

Who is building your trans, how are you driving it, how are you controlling it, what are your trans temps normally and how high are you letting them get?

What car is this? Doesn't the 94 Camaro in your signature have the shitty 4l60 (no e) aka 700r4? Is it a computer controlled trans or does it use the stupid TV cable?

A local guy is building it, and street driven maybe 20 miles a week. I don't drive it hard at all and haven't been to the track since 2002. Not sure about trans temps.

This is a cut and paste from another post I made in the A4 section with details on the issues i've had. Its currently being torn apart again to see what they can find, but I'm thinking while i drive it on this build i need to save up for a conversion.

So around 170k miles on a stock engine my trans went. Flare shifting

1. Stock rebuild from a local guy - lasted a month Flare shifting
2. Stock rebuild from same guy - lasted a month Flare shifting
3. Shift kit, trans cooler, and rebuild from same guy - 3 weeks - Broken sprag

Car now has bolt ons... exhaust, Cai, and gears

4. Replaced sprag and rebuilt from same guy - 5 weeks - Broken sprag

5. Vacuum modulator kit, new servo, new sprag, new bands from the same guy - 2 weeks Flare shifting

All of those were pretty much cost of parts so I kept going to him till the 4th one went.

6. New transmission shop - Everything back to stock to get a baseline - 2 months - flare shifting

7. Same trans shop - vacuum modulator kit stock rebuild - broken sprag in 3 weeks

8. Same shop (at this point hes adding aftermarket stuff and refusing to charge me) - New everything, case and all, Borg Warner "dual cage" 29 element sprag, RED LINED Alto "wide" band, Fairbanks billet 2nd servo and Sonnax "dual piston" 4th servo, Raybestos "Z-Pack", modded trans go kit. (probably forgetting things) -

about 1k on this trans I add all mods in Sig.

lasts 7k and 3 years.

Find somebody to build the transmission that knows what they are doing. My first advice would be to give Jeremy @ RPM transmissions a call as they can definitely build the transmission for what you are doing with the car.

Rpm transmission has always been good to everyone I know who went with them. Not sure if they are a sponsor here or not but if you google "rpm transmissions" they will come up pretty fast.

Give me a call tomorrow. I would he happy to help you out.

At your power level and the limited driving that you said you to leads me to believe the builder isn't familiar with the 4L60e or he is overlooking an internal problem with the transmission. We ship 10-15 4L60e transmissions a week out of here. We have 3 full time auto builders that are all extremely knowledgeable in performance 4L60es and run them in their own vehicles. I know we can get you in a trans that will last.

Ive gotta hand it to you... your a patient guy to go through 9 rebuilds before giving up but having owned both a4 &m6 an m6 can bring its own set of issues , maybe try giving a prominent 4l60 builder take a crack at it before throwing in the towel - whats 1 more time to a guy like you !

FWIW a local C5 runs an RPM auto, he makes like, 900ish RWHP I think, hasn't had any issues. I'd say that'll be the last automatic you'll ever need.

Get with Jeremy over at RPM Transmission and he will take care of you. They are some of the best in the business when it comes to transmissions.

Yeah, once can be a fluke for a tranny rebuilder, but twice? Let alone 9 times?

He doesn't know what he's doing.

Find a new builder.

Yikes -- I'm sorry to hear about this mess. Fool me once....

I would definitely look into getting a new transmission guy. The lifespan on a rebuild at your power level should be exponential to what you've been getting.

There's a ton of info on the A4 forum about what goes wrong with the typical local rebuilds. Search posts by mrvedit and PBA.
