ls6/ls7 clutch kit?

Question ls6/ls7 clutch kit?

hey guys. I have a 02 ss with ls6 heads and cams, 40lbs injectors, and the performance tune the hyper pac offers. my clutch just went out today and i am confused on what the stock ss came with and what clutch kit would work best given my mods and that i like to drive spiritedly in my car. some people say the ls6 kit works, some don't, some say ls7 bolts right up, some don't. theres lots of different opinions. any info or advise would be greatly appreciated

I also have a tick adjustable master cylinder if that makes a difference

i do autocross maybe 3-4 times a year max. i plan on going to 1-2 track days as well. and i have the bfg g force super sport comp 2 summer tire

If it were me I'd get a clutch that's gonna last a long time, easy to use, and would handle whatever I'd throw at it down the road. A good twin disc is hard to beat for that

gotcha. what twin disc would you recommend
and just out of curiosity would the ls6 and/or ls7 kits work?

I wouldn't go with an ls7 clutch.

I've had good luck with Monster clutches and like them a lot. I've had two stage 4 and now have a twin disc from Monster.

What are you trying to spend? There's some nice light weight clutch setups out there but they aren't the cheapest.

How much horsepower/torque are you making? I'm assuming 375ish at the wheels?

Sure those will both work and are a good bang for buck. With that said I run a McLeod RST twin disk and love it

ya around 375 wheel. I'm trying to be at least a little thrifty. i know you don't want to skimp on a clutch but i also don't need to spend a million dollars. i know thats kinda vague but i would like to spent around the same as a ls7 clutch

The ls7 will bolt up and hold the power, but it's heavy. It will feel like you lost throttle response vs the ls1/6 clutch.

A lighter twin disc will hold the power and really wake up the car with the throttle response.

There are lots of good twin discs out there and opinions vary. At your power levels you won't need a 850 hp über clutch.

I would aim for about 33 pounds clutch and flywheel combined. You could also get there with a monster stage 2 and aluminum flywheel or equivalent.

LS7 clutch is heavy and is self adjusting , I have one and cant wait until I can replace it as it has the common LS7 problem of blocking shifts at rpm over 5k. You need an ls7 compatible flywheel for it to bolt in btw.

Beyond that your car has a single cam not cams and I am assuming you have a hypertech tune with heads cam and 40lb injectors you would benefit greatly from a real tune.

As everyone is saying and I said as well, don't get an ls7 clutch. Darth_v8r is right on point saying you don't need a crazy clutch that's rated for 1,000hp/tq

There's a lot of good clutches for around the price of an ls7 clutch kit that will perform way better and drive much more comfortable (stock feeling)

Ya ls7 is definitely overkill. Im still curious as to how well the ls6 will work.

I got an LS7 clutch and ls2 aluminum flywheel and it shifts fine over 5krpm, I've never had a problem with it.
I'm only pushing 340rwhp but the clutch has been just fine and I drive my car pretty hard.
This LS7 clutch thang about not wanting to be shifted over 5krpm is a new one to me, never heard of it nor has it happened to me.

EDIT:

I did have problems shifting over 5krpm but that was due to the factory synchro shims failing.
Once I got the tranny rebuilt I have no issues shifting at redline for my car @6krpm...I rarely to it, usually around 5500rpm when I do.

That is a rarely discussed benefit of lighter clutches - they are much easier on the synchros, since there is less MOI on the input shaft for the synchros to counter.

Ws6store has some competitive prices on the ls6 and ls7 clutches as does Sdpc. Have you considered a monster stage 1? Costs a little more than the ls6 and ls7, but it doesn't have a self adjusting pressure plate and takes heat/ abuse better. About 500 ish on sale.

Tick performance has some nice clutch package deals on their website too.
