Default Whine in first and second gear at low rpms.

Started getting a whine that almost sounds like a screw type supercharger at low rpms in first and second. Is this caused by a bushing or bearing going bad? Is it something I need to have looked at immediately or is it just going to be a noise that I can live with?

Mods are 408, 80 mm turbo, 850+ at the wheels.

Could be bearings.
Time to pull it for tear down and inspection.

Bump on this question. I am getting first, second and third gear whine and I am not sure if it is an issue that needs to be looked at immediately or not. I am thinking of going to the track when the weather cools down but don't want to chance it if I will cause more damage.

LISTEN TO ME GUYS!!!!!!!

Stop driving it and do a fluid change. I drive a modded 2017 camaro ss with the tr6060 and after dropping out my motor and trans (for mod purposes) and re-installing I too got the supercharger whine in 1st 2nd and 3rd. When the clutch was depressed it went away. I did not pay much attention because my car has less than 2500 miles. I did a few 40-150 pulls and after one final pull my trans locked up.

I got it towed and after dropping the transmission there was practically no fluid at all. Please stop driving your cars and get a transmission service done. It could be that simple or could be burnt bearings etc.

I just swapped my fluids with the 3 quarts of oil and 1 quart of thicker oil trick people talk about here. Swapping fluid didn't change the sound one way or the other.

A whine is either a damaged gear or a shaft out of alignment. With it being 1&2 for the OP I'd say the rear bearing for the input cluster.

A bearing that is wearing out will cause a whine due to misalignment of the shaft that rides on it. The problem is the bearings are heat treated. Once you wear past the heat treated surface the metal wears VERY fast. Improper preload on the bearings can also cause this issue. This usually only happens after the trans has been rebuilt.

My trans had been "built" before I got the car. Is supposed to be able to handle a lot of power but I'm at 850+ rwhp and getting the whine so I don't know.

Does the car have the Viper or SS-R output/input shaft? If not, you are one rough launch away from a snapped main shaft.

There are magnets within the trans but can only be inspected by removing the tail housing if you are so inclined to check. This can be done with the trans in the car.

Common upgrades are carbon blockers, bronze shift fork pads, billet syncro assembly keys and a bronze shifter cup. These all help with shifting but don't really affect the tq rating. Only the mating surface area of the gears(early T56 had smaller gears, after 2000 I believe got the viper sized gears) and input/output shaft size are your primary factors.

How many miles and what fluid are you running? I've run into a couple fluids that caused a whine in my 5/6 gears.

82,000 miles for me. Fluid unknown, bought the car 7 years ago with 68,000 miles and never serviced the transmission.

Mine I have no idea on what was actually done to it just that it was actually built to last behind a turbo motor. Some company called CMS did the work.

Does it sound like a bearing or something or will I need to rebuild the trans?

Are you running a fluid pump on the trans? If not, my guess is the input/cluster mesh and input bearing have been starved for oil and will show heat damage upon disassembly. Does the whine go away in 4th gear?

This man is spot on. My transmissionis doing the same thing, and oil starvation is why. The damage is already done, you will need to replace the gears to make the whine go away.

Yes it goes away in fourth. I really just want to know if it is a ticking time bomb about to blow up or if it is just an annoyance with the whining.
