Default shift detent (Anti-Venom) mod

After much reading I went ahead and did this mod, and it definitely works well if you have a aftermarket shifter that's very stiff and notchy. In my case I have a MGW shifter and added a small copper washer. It loosened it up just enough to where banging the gears really fast is definitely easier, but not so loose to where it had any negative impact on other characteristics of the shifter. I may try a second washer at some point, but for now one washer seems to be a noticeable and good difference. So for any of you that like your aftermarket shifter, but always felt it was a bit too tight and notchy, I highly r eccommend this basically free and effective mod. For those who don't know what this mod is, you can find a few threads on here about it, and a lot more on the Corvette forums

Nice to see it worked out, anti venom and MGW seems to be the sweet spot for shifting.

For me one washer was just enough I think. It's still notchy no doubt, but not so much so that I can't slam the next gear with greater speed. And that's exactly what I wanted. You still feel that same notch when going into the next gear, but it's just not as pronounced as before. I have a feeling that two washers might make the whole shifting experience a little vague with not enough feedback, but I may still may try it at one point to be sure

An unmodified Magnum or moddedfor for direct F-body fit? If they swapped F-body rail and detent in, that's why.

Also what would be the best trans fluid I could run for the T56? I realize there's tons of info on this, but it seems to be all over the map. I'm currently running Dextron 3, which I'm told is the preferred choice for this trans by GM. Current trans fluid is about 5 years old, and I was considering changing to something better if it exists. Have any of you heard of BP Synco Shift? I've been hearing great things on it recently

Did you have to drop the trans to do this?

Did not have to drop the trans, but it is a pita to get at. We ended up using a impact gun with a swiveled end socket to finally get at it

I ended up doing the second washer. It actually still has enough to catch so I do still feel it, but it's a bigger change than going from zero to one washer.

I had read stories of it popping out of gear with two washers. I have not experienced that myself

Darth, have you tried different trans oils? What do you stick with?

Yeah I've tried a few dex 3's, RP, and Amsoil torquedrive.

I like the torquedrive of the ones I've tried. Never tried D4. Warmed up, RP and TD are pretty close. TD does better cold.

Yeah I am strongly considering Amsoil or BP Syncro Shift. Seems like those two have the most solid overall results from what I'm seeing.

I did this modification a couple of days ago.
Rather than purchase copper washers online I went down to Lowe's and found some washers that work in the specialty bolting section.
They were available in 18 and 14 ga so I bought 1 of each at 89 cents each
They are 3/4" ID x 1 1/4" OD and fit real nice on the little detent piece that screws into the transmission housing.

I ended up using the 18 ga. washer and went ahead and used a bit of silicone sealer on the threads so they wouldn't leak.

Does the washer perform any sealing function here? My local store didn't have the copper washers so I just got a regular properly sized washer.

The washer itself doesnt perform any sealing function. It just causes the detent ball to be less pronounced. It needs to be the right size though of course
