Default 3rd gear grinding, 3rd & 4th gear rattling noise

I have a 1999 SS 6spd with 105,000 miles. I have had a problem with grinding into 3rd gear. I changed the fluid and the problem is almost completely gone(has happened once in 2500 miles since).

I still have a rattling noise while in 3rd and 4th gear. I did not start hearing this until this spring when I put in a hurst shifter. I am assuming I am hearing this now because there is less noise isolation with this shifter.

My question is- do I need to rebuild the tranny soon?
-do I just have bad syncros?
-How long would I dare let the rattling go as long as I am getting into third fine?

I am considering going through the tranny this winter. I just need to see if I should make it a big priority

Thanks!!

No, The clutch was replaced along with the input shaft and flywheel at 77k, before I got the car.

So changing the trans fluid got rid of the problem of grinding the gear while going into 3rd gear? That's great news!! Which gear fluid did you use, regular or synthetic Dextron III?

105 thousand Miles????

I would say that the tranny could use some freshening.

I'm guessin your 3-4 shift fork has Worn out Pads on it.
You probably have damage now on your 3-4 synchro assembly and third gear.
Probably more once someone gets inside of it.

You can put it off as long as you like, Or till it won't go into 3rd all together.
The damage is probably already done if you been driving it like that.
It will just get harder and harder to get into third, Then you just won't be able to get third at all.
Too bad you aint around Here.
I can do one of those things in about 3 hours with all the parts on hand.

Thanks for the info. I am going to try and put it off till winter. I don't need another project right now. I have done muncies in the past and will rebuild it myself this winter. Do you have any recommendations for parts sources?? I do have a factory service manual.

Thanks!!

On the 1999 Camaro's the 3rd-4th gears shift fork is WRONG. They have a TSB on it and I just recently got mine fixed this past week along with putting in my new Spec 3 and master/slave cylinder. The problem will persist until that shift fork is replaced. Sorry...

tump, please post if this works. I'd hate to pay to rebuild the trans if it only needs a fluid change!!
