HELP!!! Tremec magnum f with McLeod rst clutch installation
HELP!!!!
I have a 2002 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.
I am trying to install a Tremec Magnum-F 6 speed transmission as well as a McLeod RST twin disc clutch (6405507). I am using a pilot bushing SKF B656.
When the transmission shop tried to put it all in there was about a 0.25”-0.50” gap between the bellhousing and transmission.
What would cause this? Why will it not marry together properly.
While they were trying to figure it out, they were able to use my stock Luk clutch with the Tremec transmission.
So why would it not work with the McLeod clutch?
Has anyone had any fitment issues, or have any suggestions as to what the mechanic can do?

It's the clutch. You're not the first to have this problem. If the airgap is too large, you will have to shim the slave. But measurements will have to be taken.
1. good luck with their customer service
2. It's really bad that you're paying a shop to have to go through this.
3 If the shop isn't familiar with setting up and/or measuring for gap and depending on their actual abilities to understand how to do it, You're gonna pay even more.
It's not a hard process. Just need some dial calipers and a straight edge.
FYI, I had to R&R my trans 9 times in 2 months. All the while had to send my RXT in 3 times within that period and they still didn't get it right. They even tried to blame Tick because the trans had just been rebuilt at same time. So the trans had to go back to be checked. In the end it finally worked ok. But for a twin disc it had the pedal of a Spec stg3. So I trashed it and bought a monster. $800 mistake
Luckily I had access to a lift and all the necessary equipment to R&R the trans easily. I can have one out in about 45 min.
If at all possible, return it and get a Monster or tilton. If you're on a budget, get the LS7 clutch kit. They hold about 500hp and do well.
You'll find more bad reviews on Mcleod than good.
Hope this all works out

What do you think would be wrong with the clutch?
I have tried their ctheirer service and they told me 2 times they will call me back and they never did.
I have a friend that has this same combo in 2 of this F bodies and they fit. So we are all confused why it's not fitting in mine.
Do you think it might be something with the pilot bushing?

The pilot bushing well not change. Because the input shaft on the transmission is what slides into the bushing. Something is wrong with your McLeod clutch. Are you sure it’s compatible with a t56 magnum F. Because the one you listed is showing up to 1997-2015.
isn’t the magnum-f for the LT motor.
6406807 is the McLeod part number for a LT to magnum-f.

So... they tried to install it without even putting the slave in as well and there was still a gap.

would it still be the issue if they were able to use the oem clutch with the new transmission. That all fit together. But then when they tried again with the new clutch it wouldnt fitup. So why would the bushing work with the old clutch?

This link gives the ID of your SKF bushing: SKF B656
If someone can give you the OD of the Tremec's input shaft, you would know for sure if this bushing is the problem or not.

You said,
“While they were trying to figure it out, they were able to use my stock Luk clutch with the Tremec transmission.”
So the way I’m reading it is the transmission fits with the old clutch.
So that would mean the pilot bushing allows the transmissions input shaft to slide in.
Wanted you to look this up for yourself.
But, here you go I highlighted it for easy reading.
The luk clutch must have a smaller foot print then the McLeod. Clearly there is interference with the McLeod.

If the original clutch allowed the transmission bellhousing to come all the way forward and mate up with the engine block then no, the bushing isn't the problem.

Pull the clutch. Put the bell back on.
Does it seat?
N - fix the pilot problem
Y - install the new clutch and leave the bell off. Gently seat the trans. into the clutch and pilot. Measure trans. to engine block. Subtract bell depth. This is proof in the pudding.
You can solve this with a spacer, or deeper bell and proper pilot setup, or waiting as long for Mcleod to fix your clutch as it took for Tremec took to release the pointless -F units.
Friendly brotherly advice to anyone reading: skip the Magnum F when you can put a reg. Magnum in with some work.
