Recommend a quiet shifter for a T-56
I have a T-56 that is currently using an American Powertrain shifter. This shifter is way too noisy in my application. Too much rattle. Maybe it's the shifter's fault, maybe it is the LS3/cam's fault....doesn't matter, I need a solution that doesn't create so much rattling noise.
I need to find an aftermarket solution that does not use a long shift lever and is not noisy.
I have only seen a lot of talk here about completely subjective things like "feel"...but no input on noise.
Recommendations?

Currently have the Hinson shifter in the Chevelle. It rattles terribly. Shift action is great, but I hate rattles, and I’m prolly gonna change shifters soon.

My T56 F-body MGW shifter has no vibration in the hand, let alone rattle noises. The trans is a Level 5 RPM Transmissions (Indiana). I mention that because I'm not sure if how the trans is built has a lot to do with vibration in the shift handle?
If you go with an MGW then I recommend making the order over the phone (talk to a real person) and ask for the longer shift handle. It is 1" longer than the normal short throw and makes a world of difference in effort and ease to figure out which gate you are selecting. The standard short-throw handle is too short in my opinion.

First thing to check is the hardware connecting the shifter handle to the shifter. You'll need to pull up the boots to do this. Even the stock cars, like the F Body, would vibrate this hardware loose and the washers would rattle like cymbals on a drum kit. If loose, just get some Nord-Lock washers on the bolts and the problem will be solved.
That being said, I had a Hurst Billet Plus shifter with a Lou's Short Stick on the end and was very happy with that combo. The Hurst springs loosened up over time, but are easily serviceable with a single screw. The MGW's have a reputation for being solid over a longer period of time.

My HURST Pro Billet is dead quiet and shifts perfect. Had it for 19 years now. You set the shift stops when you first install it. I use loc tite on shifter stick to base bolts. They never come lose

Ok sounds like a lot of options worth checking out. Just to clarify, my transmission is a Magnum-F.
The AP shifter is perfect for what I want. I liked the shifting motion and feel. I just could not get it to a quiet state no matter how I tried to dampen it.

Took a brief test drive and the MGW is excellent. MGW was a pleasure to deal with as well....because my application is really far outside the box, we had to do some improvising.
Initially we tested one of MGW's standard shifters, just to see how well it may work, but it really didn't fit properly with the boot and wasn't threaded for the existing **** developed for the car....but shift feel was good and most importantly there was zero rattling or other shifter noise while in gear and climbing through the rpms.
Once we saw how the standard shifter fit, George had another shifter that was designed for another outside-the-box application that he felt would work much better, so we gave that a shot and he was correct. It was about as perfect as I can expect without a full custom design.
Shifts are great and zero rattling! Great success, Much thanks to the recommendations here!

Same here. A lot of trouble threads never get an outcome, good or bad. To recap on what I said in post #2, I run a solid trans mount on the Magnum F. This winter I changed that to a rubber trans mount, so when weather is good, I’ll get the car out and see if my rattling Hinson quiets down due to this change. I’m also looking for less NVH in the interior of the car from this trans mount change.

In the performance world that I came from the Steeda Triax & the MGW are the “top tier” shifters. I have the Triax in the T5 variety and it’s real nice. People like the MGW due to its handle adjustability. I’m not sure if the MGW handle for the T56 is as adjustable as it is for the T5 but I imagine it probably is.
*Edit* I’m not sure if the Triax for ford Tremc T56 will fit the T56 that’s in the GM’s. But if it does, it’s a nice shifter. I also see the MGW handle is indeed adjustable for the T56 as well and that ole boy ended up with one.
