Angry How the hell did you take off the bellhousing??

I'm in the middle of my clutch install, and I'm stuck trying to get the damn bellhousing off. I already took off the 8 bolts, and I have tried prying it with a flat head screwdriver, whacking it with a rubber mallet, and even tried prying it off with a 3 foot crowbar! How the heck did you guys take it off? The bottom part seems to be loose, but the top isn't budging. I also took off the starter so I could pry at the block, but that mother fer is still on there! Any tips from you guys that already went through this?

Those dowel pins can be a real pain if they are seized up. Took me and 2 buddies a couple hours with some serious force to get my tranny down. I made sure to put some antiseize on them when we reinstalled.

Sounds like that's my problem. It's way too late to attempt this right now, so I'll try first thing tomorrow morning to see if I can get it off. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I had to beat the **** out of mine when I did the first clutch changeout (stocker removed at ~45k miles). I got under there with the 32oz hammer and went nuts. The dowels were siezed to the aluminum.

I sanded the dowels a little, and applied a little anti-sieze afterwards.

the first time i removed the starter and those two black plastic shields on each side and beat on it for a few minuets and it popped right off.

Thanks guys, the damn thing finally came off. I swear, I was making up my own curse words trying to get that damned thing off. It was seized where the dowels go into the bellhousing. I'm gonna cover those suckers in anti-seize when I re-install it.

There are pry slots in the casting joint on either side that will accept a screw drriver.Beating on it with hammers is not smooth.

Something that often helps when you have a steel pin stuck in an aluminum hole is a propane torch.

A little tip that I found works great. Pull the starter and put a 2x4 lengthwise against the bellhousing and beat it with a hammer. By using the wood you can use a really big hammer.

Good luck with that.

You didn't have to mess with MY bellhousing. There was no way it was 'prying' off.

(technically, I used a 2x4, and beat on the 2x4 with my hammer, and the 2x passed the blows to the soft aluminum - so damage to my bellhousing was minimal)

Yeah, I ended up using that freaking crowbar I had and putting a lot of force between the block and the bellhousing. I ended up having to drop the starter, and the two little plastic pieces that cover up the bellhousing (behind the oil filter and behind the starter). Definetely put a lot of anti-seize on those two freaking pins and the holes in the bellhousing for easier removal next time around (if there is a next time). Thanks to everyone for your help. Now all I have to do is figure out why my car won't go into gear. (If it's not one thing, it's another)
