Question Broken Shift Fork question

What would cause the shift fork to brake? The shift fork is broken at the tip of the U of the Fork. It broke a pease about an 1" long. I bought this T56 for $75 because the guy need'd to get rid of stuff before he left back home. All I he told me about the trans is that he had a hard time shifting from 3rd to 4th gear. Don't know which shift fork it broke. I pulled the cover off and from what I see it's the first shift fork in sight. What other issue's could this trans have? Thanks you for your time and help.

Well, personally I don't know, but for $75, you'd have been stupid for not buying it in my opinion.. That is awesome.

I have a broken shift fork in my t56 which is apart right now getting a overhaul. This is what went bad when that went bad.

1 T56 basic rebuild kit.
1 Second Gear 43 Teeth
1 1-2 shift fork.
1 1-2 synchro assembly
and
1 3-4 steel shift fork

You have to disassemble & inspect it. The 3/4 gears& fork is in the front at the input shaft.

Abuse, and abuse alone. Probably he had issues with the 3-4 synchro keys (which get bent / broken by shift rail overtravel) and just beat the living crap out of it out of frustration / general stupidity. The lip goes in the groove in the slider and things were forced until it reached an angle at which it had to break.

Oh, by the way, I wouldn't mind seeing that fork like up close and personal. Let me know what you can arrange on that.

I will have pictures later on today of my shift fork 1-2 broke. I will also have pics of the 2nd gear and so you can see how worn it looks to the new one. The reason I said to get the 3-4 steel shift fork was due to the fact that your allready in there and its a nice upgrade for $50.

The fork closest to the front is the 3-4 fork. If you get me a tag number off of the trans, I can get you a quote on it from work.

Also, the 3rd gear synchro ring was probably worn, as well as second. When the synchro ring is worn it is harder to shift, and the fork takes a beating. They are a lined ring, and sometimes the lining comes off and the sunchro is pretty useless at that point.

I was thinking of getting the Master rebuild kit and steel shift forks from www.thegearbox.org Is there anything else that I would need? Or should that cover it.

The master rebuil kit should do it. That along with your shift fork. Also, check the synchronizer teeth (the small teeth on the gear) on all your gears, especially 3rd and 2nd. The gear on the input shaft is 4th, then 3rd behind it, and second behind that. It always seems like 3rd and 2nd take the biggest beating.

was that an aluminim shift fork?
either way 75 bucks was too much for it because you can get the steel ones for 50 brand new for either the gearbox or d&d
