Default Q for experienced "shim" guys..

OK. This is for you poor fellas that have pulled and shimmed your slave cylinders a few times.
Approximately how much shim thickness relates to how much pedal release point upward movement? I'm asking because my billet flywheel has been resurfaced several times and my iron clutch has a bit of mileage on it. My slave keeps leaking(I just replaced it due to leakage) and my release point has moved lower to the floorboard. I believe the slave is getting pushed out a tad too far which is causing the leakage. So I think I need a shim behind my slave to equal things back up til I can afford to do a new clutch/rebuilt trans combo.

Thanks y'all
D

Cant tell you relationship between shim thickness and pedal travel, but if you have had FW resurfaced 2x I would guess .040-.080, would be a safe bet.

I know with my last clutchs SPEC STG came with .025 shim and STG5 with a.100 shim.

I can help you out one step more. I have a 2 sets of T56 Fbody clutchs PP-DISC-FW both 12000 miles and 30000 miles, if you would be intrested in a replacment, also have a SPEC STG II PP&DISC, 10000 miles upgraded to a STG5.

the only thing i can tell you is that find out how much of metal been taken out of flywheel, then put that much shim back in it. as far as your pedal, just have to try it a few time til you got your pedal where you want it.
make sure don't put way too much shim in it. when you put tranny back, the throwout bearing should not touch the finger. you can tell by feel when you put tranny back in or try to hook up slave with tranny in and if the slave being push in, you will not be able to hook up the line.

Stage 5 only being a .1 shim?? You mean .1 inches ?? It's much thicker than that...

To answer your question Dustin Butts. I would run a shim of about .25" and go from there. The Stage 5 is about a .35" shimm I believe.. It was nowhere close to .1" thick closer to 1/2 inch thick to be exact.. At least the new stage 5's that I have seen are that thick..

I say it was around 90-100 thousands thick.(might of screwed up n my last post) I just made another one out of some phonolic material for my install. I was thinking the phonolic material would help act as a insolator, and prevent some heat transfer to the slave, vs the steel shim.

I'd think it would be easier to get another flywheel & an adjustable master?

Perhaps. But a lot more money...

but if you need to do it down the road and your in there changing things around now, go for it.. Have the pressure plate surfaced too.

I just did a rebuild and new clutch. I used a spec shim, I don't know exactly how thick it was. But it looked to be about an 1/8". The peddle releases low. But I also need to bleed the system some more, I think I've got air in it. It drives fine though. Clutch disengauges very good, It has no chatter at all with 140 miles on it now.
