The 5-6 is already steel.
After you replace the 3-4 shift for the only one left thats aluminum is the 1-2
out of the 100 or so T-56s I have rebuilt I have yet to see a Bent or Broken 3-4 But I always suggest a steel one.
I have how ever seen at least 2 Broken 1-2 shift forks.
The billet Keys are a good Idea.
Seen many of them Break on the 3-4
And just this weekend say my first one broke on the 5-6.
This all in an 04 GTO tranny.

What people call a bent 3/4 fork is actually an enlarging of the shift rail hole. It acts just like a bent fork, allowing the fork too much mmovement as installed.
The 5/6 fork is actually iron. Its flaw is a narowed section in one tine that is there for assembly ease. The fork I mentioned is steel and it will be forged. It will also have a significant cross-section gain ( both material and design improvements)

I still haven't seen a Bent of wore out one.
But I have only done around 100 rebuilds over the last 3 or 4 years.
I can also see where that 5-6 fork could be made stronger.
For drag racers its not needed. But road racing maybe.
those two over drives are really designed for that kind of abuse IMO.
I think it would be a good Idea to get a Synchro assemble like the one in the vette or GTO in there that has the Dual Frictions to help .
in a race , even a road race. What Kinda speeds we talkin about
An Fbody does what? 130 + MPH in 4th?

Not with 4.10s (unless you have a built motor that can scream to 8 grand and still make power or really tall tires)! I'm into the rev limiter going through the traps at 111-112 mph with 275/40 17 DRs in 4th w/4.10s.
