Default Question involving the "infamous" 1-4 Shift

One of my friends was talking today about the "infamous" 1-4 shift. Anyone want to elaborate on this? He said it had somethign to do when he took the RPMs higher in 1st gear, it basically forced him to shift into fourth. Is this Correct?

Yes, GMs wonderful "skid shift" feature on the M6 cars. Basically it locks out 2nd gear, and allows you to slide to 4th gear instead, saving gas. It only occurs under something like 25% throttle, or right around 2000RPMs. The Skipshift light will come on when its active. This feature allows us to buy our LS1 cars without having to pay gas guzzler tax because the EPA when testing the cars, are forced to skipshift into 4th gear, and save gas.
If you want more info search "skipshift".

And you can pay around $25-$30 to buy the "skip shift eliminator" plug pack, or you can just buy a resistor yourself and wire it in there.

Save your money..... find someone with HP tuners that can effectively disable skip shift by reprogramming when it engages.

if you're going to buy a custom tuner, it will be able to remove the skipshift right from the puter itself. i have a custom tuned granetelli predator, removed the skip electronically, and had no problems. SLP also makes a plug-in adapter thing for about $45 or so, that can remove it without reprogramming.

I have an LT1, was always wondering what was up with the "Skip shift" light comming on all the time. So is this necessarily a "bad" thing if it saves gas?

When ever I'm accelerating slow (which is not to often) it seems i try to get speed but i still try to shift into second but of course it locks and i slide into fourth so i'm in the middle of the intersection going no where cuz 4th at 15 mph doesn't do ANYTHING hahaha. then i'm like slowing down and the cars behind me are beeping like crazy and i'm like screw this, shove it into 1st again and just leave them in smoke. God I love my trans am.
