Default whine in t-56

Man , I hope this is just my imagination , But my tranny seems to whine in 1-3 gears , not a real loud whine , But I have never noticed it before , my car only has 20,000 miles on it , could the fluid needs changed ? I thought I was getting away from week trannys when I got rid of my mustangs !!!!

Not trying to sound like a dick, but you might post this over in the "Drivetrain, Suspension and Brakes" forum.
The T-56 is a damn strong tranny, with the possible exception of the shift forks bending a tad too easily and the syncros wearing out quickly. Certainly, it's TONS stronger than the weak-as-water T-5 (T-45? can't remember) in the 'Stang. NE1 know the rated torque input for the T-56??

Regardless, I do get a little bit of gear whine from my T-56, but certainly nothing I believe indicates a problem. The T-56 design just has a quirk or two. Now, if you've got an incredibly loud whining noise, be concerned. If it's just faint whining though, I'd say it's probably a'ight.

I think the stock rated t-56 is like 450lbs of torque...not sure on that # though...I'm sure this will get moved to the drivetrain for ya...

Do you have or have you recently installed an after market shifter?

They tend to relay more tranny noise into the car than stock.

If its whining, it probably isn't much to worry about. I've had a few of mine whine slightly after beating the hell out of them. When they start to grind between shifts, save up for a synchro rebuild. About $750.

moving to drivetrain section

Are you sure it's tranny whine? The diff's a known to have whine at part throttle conditions. Both my Zexel and my Auburn have it.

I have actually rode in the car.

I think the noise when the clutch is pushed in is normal. Throw out bearing noise you are describing because my car does the same thing and so has every M6 I have ever been in.

The whine is a different story, it was very clear and audbile with the windows down. We didn't have the windows up. My car does not make a comparable sound to the whine at all.

So, there is a second description.

Although, I think I can still hear it in 4th but it is not as loud.

It sounds like the bearings in the tranny. Maybe the input shaft bearing? I had an odd problem not to long ago when a snap ring in the extension housing popped off and it sounded like a whining rearend when in 5th and 6th. Does yours whine in all the gears? If so my vote is still the input shaft bearing. The easiest thing to check would be to insure that you have proper amount and type of fluid in the tranny. Otherwise it will require the tranny to be pulled and opened up. Until then its a guessing game.

Good Luck

ya Eric , with the windows up it's not as loud ..
I hope it's just a input shaft bering , if Im not mistaken , It shouldn't be that hard to repair when I have the tranny out for the clutch instal !!
