Yeah, my tranny is on its death bed. I am just wondering what you guys that are running a lot more HP than me are doing to keep this thing alive. I didn't think I was really that hard on my tranny, but I guess it doesn't like all that speedshifting. Could it be the factory clutch isn't holding up to its end of the bargain? If so, would getting an aftermarket clutch help the T56? Please advise. Thaaaaaaaaaanks.

See this was my problem as well...I'm just a stock heads car with a cam...makes damn good power and sure enough the T-56 took a crap...I pondered the idea of a TH400 for a while and how it would be in the future...I looked into the idea of warranty...that was a no go obviously...I had a star spec stage 3 kevlar disc clucth at the time (great clutch)...a rebuild w/viper internals was somewhere from $1500-$2500, therefore I looked into selling all my 6-speed stuff and I did, and now I'm TH400 with a 4500 stall, I have a manual valvebody on the thing so I still have to shift, I went and looked at is yesterday and the car looks amazing, I got the B&M hammer/ratchet shifter and the boot fits right on it, one who isn't too into cars wouldn't know its a auto... I should have it sometime this afternoon.....

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! I've had an auto already!!!!! I have a bolt-on record to break here with my 6-speed. Plus, it's more fun. Where could I get Viper internals from? I heard Vipers use the same synchronizers, blocking rings, etc.

Your times are impressive, Westech in wisconsin builds the transmissions up....I'm sure someone will post some info on it...

I plan on some MAJOR power in the next year or so....if not stroker, I am going with a built 346 w/procharger...

Care to share those sources with the rest of us

I hear a lot of rumors of these upgraded and Viper internals for the F-body tranny, but all the shops that I have talked to, D&D included, does not have any information on this. Not a flame, I'm just looking to get the straight scoop on this.

I don't powershift anymore. It used to wear out my T56 too quickly. SO, I just learned to shift quickly instead, and they tend to last a LOT longer. One rebuild typically lasts me over a full season of racing and about 22K miles.

I've only hurt the internals once, when my rearend broke and locked up, causing several things in the tranny to jar loose and come apart. Other than that, only 2 synchro rebuilds. No way to make those survive any longer. My car has 80K miles, and over 1400+ passes down the track.

i agree with tony i have had 2 camaros both m6. neither one had any broblems the '98 i needed to stop down shifting to slow down and the '01 has all sorts of power i just changed the clutch and im good to go

and i have never speed shifted either one and the '98 had 37000 miles and was in good condition the '01 has 15000 miles and still good other than the whine that just appeared

What is the symtoms of the tranny going bad ? I have a few threeds going on this issue now and am totaly confussed .... My car has 20,000 miles on it , The tranny is now making a whinning noise through the first three gears , fourth on doesn't seem to make any ... It is not hard to shift , doesn't grind at all , the cars T.O bering is now roaring and the car just feels sluggish , the clutch feels a little funny , but who knows , I can't get a stright answer ! I guess what I need to know is , how do I know for sure my tranny is bad ?

Why is everyone here complaining. You should try 1000 miles and then your tranny locks up on you.Yeah my buddys 2002 ram air just had that happen to him about 2 months ago.Hows that for a short life.I am sure a 10 bolt on an m6 dumping the clutch at 6grand would last longer ha ha ha

Billy C, mine isn't whining, it just pops out of 2nd gear after letting out the clutch. And it's starting to do the same thing in 4th, and it grinds going into 1st sometimes. I wish I could tell you what the deal with yours was, but I can't. Take it to a mechanic buddy or something and see if he can shed some light on it.

The Booker Man, generally speaking, people complain because of negative personal experiences, and that is the case here. Your friend's problem has no effect on me or any of the other complainers. Sounds like your friend may have gotten a defective tranny from GM, whereas I'm sure my problem is due to abuse.

Make sure your clutch is dis-engaging 100% - if it isn't this will kill the synchro blocker rings
(friction material) in no time. Don't downshift/engine brake, or if you do double clutch.

As for strengthening it you can get viper shift forks, and possibly a viper output shaft conversion (this requires a new yolk on the driveshaft). You can go with the carbon fiber friction material on the blocker rings. That's about it.

If you really wanted to get fancy you could cryo the entire transmission.

All in all there really isn't a whole lot you can do other than drive it nicely/take care of it. I would also suggest using Honda ATF.

I feel your pain man.
Im on my 4th tranny now with 18,000
miles on the car. last time the dealer gave me a brand new one. ANd it lasted 250 miles thats it.
Im not even 400 at the wheels. Close but not there. Westech Let out a little secret to a friend of mine. All there upgraded parts, are
Viper parts, Syncs, shiftforks. So if it doesnt last this time. Im going to the Dodge dealer
and getting these parts myself.
