There seems to be a ton of interest in faceplated transmissions, so I figured I would bring this thread up. Hard to believe I had this done 4 years ago..LOL

Enjoy.

Well the red car went to the crusher after an unfortunate meeting with a telephone pole. I salvaged the engine and transmission and transplanted it into another FC RX7. This car had a custom rear end setup with a 8.8 Cobra rear and custom axles. I ultimately ran 10.95@125. The transmission and engine lived a short life in a 65 Corvette and is now waiting to be installed in another project. Here is the only video that I have of the black RX7.

I was going through an old external drive and found this gem. Enjoy.

That video was taken shortly after I got the trans. I was still learning how to shift it. After a while I could casually up shift without much noise at all.

So I've asked many people and gotten mixed responses. Is a faceplated T56 suitable for road racing? Can it downshift as quickly as a standard one?

I don't care about the service intervals within reason

People that doubt whether a dog ring box can be used for road racing simply have an uneducated opinion.

All serious race cars have dog ring transmissions. The example above is a G-Force T5 mated to a rotary engine. About $2500

The example above is a big step above and uses the Emco sequentially shifted transmission. It too has dog ring engagement, but with a sequential shifter mechanism. The Emco transmission is really in it's own league. About $25,000

Those Emco's are awesome! I noticed on their website, they show pics of gear setups for toploaders. I also noticed that the gears are splined for the faceplate to attach to rather then having a welded ring like my liberty setup. That's great for serviceability. No need to re-hone the gear bore everytime you weld a new ring on either!

Love the vids. You gotta be hardcore to faceplate a street car.

not really....just get tired of replaceing sycro's. Faceplated gearboxes are easy to downshift if you rev match.

I really like mine. After you get used to it, its not a big deal really. For me, downshifting is a bit of a pain sometimes. It freaks people out if they line up next to me wanting a highway roll and I rev it an pop it to a lower gear. It clunks a bit..... I've put it in neutral a few times, coasted for a bit, eff'd with the stereo, and then had to look at the spedo and think how much I wanted to rev for a lower gear. Its really only an issue if I get distracted like that. Something I shouldnt be doing anyway. Mostly, I dont even use the clutch after I'm rolling for upshifts during normal driving. After i take off, I run each gear up and ease off the gas, pull into neutral, let the RPM's drop, and just pull the next gear. Very seldom does it even make noise. Many times I'm dead matched and the slider **** butts up against the gear plate perfect so it doesnt go into gear for a sec. Just as long as you have some firm pressure on the shifter, it drops right in without drama when the RPM's change a bit. I admit I enjoy the "hardcore race car" stigma it gives....along with the locker, the damn thing sound like a train wreck sometimes!

Yes, I agree with you. BUT I have seen "hardcore" gearheads turn into girls after hearing the occasional CLUNK.

Can't argue with that shift quality, but OMG those guys need to learn about drag racing clutch setups, those 60 ft times are embarrassing.
