Agreed. The factory hurst shifters are no good. I have a ripper and like it pretty well.

I have the factory optioned "short throw" Hurst in my SS, and I actually like it pretty well. It's not quite as good as a 5.0 or a Ripper, but for me it's good enough to warrant saving $200 on a 5.0. Even on a worn T56, missing 3rd is not a concern. All you have to do is palm the back of the **** and push it, and mine goes right into 3rd. I do this when both racing and cruising around. The trick is to turn the **** so it faces forward at the 1:30 position instead of 12:00.

IMO, some people don't give themselves enough time to learn before spending money on a very good but status quo part like a Pro-5.0. Now the standard shifters in the Z28's suck, and if my car came with one, it would have been collecting dust long ago...

That would probably work well. The main thing I don't like about the factory hurst shifters was the rubber insulator that gives it the sloppy feel. Hence why I got a ripper.

Now, I believe some cars (a special option?) came with a true hurst aftermarket shifter (no rubber insulator). Those shifters worked quite well.

My 2002 Hawk came with the Hurst short throw shifter and it had the rubber insulator at the bottom of the stick. I put a UMI short stick on it and it was a nice improvement. But it was a night and day difference when I installed the pro 5.0. I got mine off eBay new shipped for $150.00. Well worth the price. The Hurst shifter is nice and I learned to shift it pretty well, but the pro 5.0 is so much smoother and way more precise.

Factory Hurst and UMI short stick combo here. I helped my buddy install a Pro 5.0 and UMI short stick. I drove it and I honestly can't see spending the $200 on it. I do fine with what I got.

We have the stock Hurst with the WS.6store 6" stick. Would it be worth it, to upgrade to a B&M Ripper? Were pretty happy with the Hurst, but i can get the Ripper free. Any ideas?

My car came with a t56 (base) stock shifter. First thing I did was put a short stick on it. This made a world of difference, but I still wanted more. I bought a used hurst short stick and Ive been EXTREMELY pleased with the combo. Id say its got better than 90% of the feel and precision of the 5.0, but without the big price tag. Hurst / short stick combo is where its at if budget is a concern.

Wait, i am confused....... On my dealer options on the window sticker, the $300 hurst option wasnt on there, did I not have to order it? If they came on all 2002's, this is excellent news to me.

I believe it was an option. I have a 2002 (not an SS though) and mine came with the base shifter, not the hurst. I believe it would be listed on the window sticker as a short throw shifter if you had it.

right, thats what i originally thought because I also did not get the "H" shift ****, i got that crummy stock one. for the prices used in the classifieds, its hard not to try a used hurst w/ short stick
