Default T56 to '84 SBC??

What vehicle's T56 will bolt up to a SBC? I have a buddy going to drop this combo into a '68 Camaro. He knows about the crossmember, shifter location, driveshaft, hydraulics, etc.

Thanks!

I THINK he might need a different flywheel. If he is using an older engine "ie" 2 piece rear main seal. I could be wrong or it might be something simple it change. I searched it back in the day so i don't remember anymore exactly. It also has to be from an LT1. So 93-97 f-body I don't know if anything will work from an older corvette.

He's converting from an automatic, so the flywheel is a given...
I thought an LT1 clutch assembly and LT1 T56 would bolt right up. He has a two piece rear main seal, don't think that matters.... does it? LT1 cars have mechanical speedos right?

Thanks!

Tremec makes a T56 for older retro-fits. It uses the old "bow tie" 4-bolt bell and a steel adapter plate to the T56. This will allow the use of all the vintage release & clutch system. It allows the carry-over of a mechanical speedo. All OEM Fcar/ T56s were electronic speedo BTW.Part # 1386-000-011. You could adapt an LT1 unit yourself but it would not be as clean/ straight forward.

any "LT1" 93-97 fbody M6.

you will need to work out how you want to do the hyd clutch.. either using the Fbody master cyl, or making a line to connect to a aftermarket cyl.

if you are using a two piece rear main, or require a "400 sbc style" external balance flywheel, you need an aftermarket flywheel... they are off the shelf items. (i happen to have one for a 400 SBC->T56 if you're interested)

if you are using a one piece rear main, you can just bolt up the LT1 flywheel.

you can easily buy a crossmember for a 1stgen, or make one.

you'll have to measure for driveshaft length... however speaking from 3rdgen experience, its the same bellhousing to tailshaft output distance as a 700R4/T5 setup.

what speedo is he using? retrofitting a T56 to worth with a mechanical speedo leaves something to be desired.. heh.
you can spend over 1k, having someone machine it to spin a cable, spend $350ish on a converter box (that uses a electric motor to spin the cable based on the VSS) or convert to a electric speedo.

If he has the stock '68 clutch and bellhousing components he could run the LS1 (98-02) T56 with the McLeod adapter plate. It may be cheaper than the LT1 swap if the car is originally a manual.

The car was a basket case, no drivetrain. Car has an Art Morrison frame, so hes cutting out what's left of the floor and fabbing the rest.
He has an 84 SBC stroked to 383ci, and has a 400 flywheel. Does an LT1 t56 bolt right up?

As long as he has the LT1 hydraulics, bellhousing and slave setup, yes it will physically bolt up to the '84 block. He then will need to get the retrofit flywheel from Centerforce (may be others as well) to use the LT1 clutch on the 2pc seal motor.Aside from that, pedals may be needed or just modify a stock '68 set,I have no experience there.Do a search I am pretty sure there is a board sponsor that sells a kit to facilitate this swap as well...Tyler IIRC.

Are you planning to run the McLeod plate?

If so you will need to swap to the LS1 input shaft as well and run an extended pilot bushing, the LT1 IS is too short.

Try LS1Joe at T56rebuilds.com for the parts,he seems to be very helpful.
