Can you use a more aggressive disc with the stock clutch?
Just wondering if you can use a more aggressive disc with the stock clutch?
Anyone ever try this before? With an adjustable master and more aggressive disc you might be able to get the stock clutch a little stronger for DR guys without too much cash.
Cheers,
Chris

Re: Can you use a more aggressive disc with the stock clutch?
Wouldn't this be the same as using the SPEC/STAR stage 3 carbons? I thought SPEC/STAR basically used a GM pressure plate with the carbon clutch but painted the pressure plate yellow. I stock pressure plate doesn't have enough clamping force, thats why CARTEK, MCLEOUD, and RAM have their own pressure plates.

Chris, the weak points in our clutch's are the GM PP's. When the PP loses clamping pressure, it's over...doesn't matter what disk you are running. For example, my stock clutch from 98 had about 35K hard miles on it before it began to slip, when I pulled it out the disk looked almost brand new but the PP was toast....

Depends on the friction material of the disc used and the disc thickness. The pressure plate fingers have to remain in the stock location for the internal bearing to do its job. The stock plate may require grinding or shimming to achieve the lever height.
If a more aggressive disc is used the stock plate will work, to a point, but the clamping pressure is the real issue.

I've had just a SPEC 3 Kevlar disc for about 1.5 years and it's never slipped once. This is my 4th clutch. It's been great. '145' Slave is starting to get a little weak, but not too bad.
Very happy here. Will change the clutch & slave out next time I've got the headers and tranny out. Street radials only here. Has seen 360-395rwhp over the last 1.5 yrs. Lots of abuse. '01 Master, non-adjustable. Only need to upgrade the master when you go aftermarket PP.
$199 Disc
$ 90 Flywheel

Was purchased 4/6/01. Was an approved setup by Dave at SPEC.
No p/n's, but decription on invoice was:
LS1 - STAGE3K CLUTCH DISC $199.99
also got a new flywheel
LS1 - STEEL FLYWHEEL $90.00
Very happy with the combo.
Using '01 Z06 Slave and a '01 or '02 Master.
No chatter. Never slipped once. Street Radials only. Supposedly good to 550rwtq I think.

i tried a metallic puck type disc with a stock pressure plate.......not enuff clamping force. It slipped my 3rd run on nittos The Ram 402/6130 however has never slipped on et streets
