Default What happens if you leave it in gear when pulling the shifter?

I was helping a friend finish the last part of his clutch install. We reinstalled the FW/pp/clutch disc and properly torqued everything down. We got the tranny stabbed and bolted up.

But heres the major problem. I wasnt there when he removed the tranny (its been off for a few weeks now). Apparently he left it in gear when he removed the shifter. Now he cannot shift into any gear. This is on a 95ish ranger.

Anyone know what the implications are of leaving it in gear when you remove the shifter? Or how we can fix it so that it will shift again? I'm guessing that its STILL in gear but somehow the lever is disengaged. Please help.

Thanks

Did you pull the shifter out & see if you can get it installed on the rail properly?
It must have been out of postion when reinstalled.

Yeah its a friends truck. I havent been over there yet but I guess I'll just have to tinker with it.

I just remember on install university they had in bold. "MAKE SURE TRANS IS IN NEUTRAL BEFORE REMOVING SHIFTER" Anyone know what difference it makes?

Mine was in neutral and I had no problems.

Anyone else ever leave it in gear and remove the shifter/tranny? I think I remember hearing that if you leave it in gear and pull the shifter off, and then the input shaft gets spun that it can get all out of whack. Thats my guess on whats happening here.

I've done it. Left one in gear when I pulled the shifter and the trans. Had no problems with the install. Maybe I got lucky, but I would check to make sure that shifter is in correctly.

It makes no difference if it is in or out of gear when removed. They just said to make sure it was in neutral to make sure the shift gates were in the easiest position to reinstall the shifter. You probably just put the shifter in wrong.
