Talking T56 Manual in a 2.2L S10? Whats needed?

Hey guys. I have a 99 S10 with a 2.2L in it with the T5 Borg Warner manual tranny. I am not doing the LS1 swap into this truck at this point but would like to put a T56 transmission in it. I am doing some performance mods to the truck so it will have some more umph. I am also looking towards the T56 seeing as the 6th gear would help tremendously for gas mileage. I have a 99 Camaro Z28 with that came with that transmission and I really would like to put one in the S10. Anybody know if they make a changeover kit to go to that transmission and mate it to the 2.2L? Any information and suggestions would be fantastic! Thanks!

Throw this into a Google search:

+T56 +muncie +adaptor +plate +billet +Saginaw

This adaptor should allow you to mate your T5 clutch/bellhousing to the LS1 T56. (May need an extended pilot bearing also)

Not sure where this will put your shifter though. On a typical T5-> LS1 T56 conversion it will set it back 2-4 inches.

I doubt that 2.2 would have enough power down low to pull 6th gear.

Yea.. I would stick with the T5.. save yourself some money now. That 6th is low..it would use more gas to try and turn it with that 4cyl than you think. 5th would still be the best gear.

well as i stated i am going to be doing some work to this 2.2l....i bought a turbo kit for it and have someone tuning it running 50lb injectors in it as well as head work. it will be running close to 220 hp from the 127 stock. it will be plenty powerful enough. and thanks to the first guy that responded to this thread as that was a big help and i found the kit you were referring too. thanks again for everyones help

A 1999 model S10 should not have a T5 in it . I am pretty sure its got a Muncie style 5 spd in it . They are a decent transmission but have issues with the main shaft in the 5th gear area . As far as installing a T56 behind the 2.2 , thats both a waste of time and money . I do not think that engine could efficently operate with a T56 behind it . If you do in fact have a T5 in your truck , it can be upgraded to handle the power . If you do not (which I am pretty sure you do not) , converting your truck to use a T5 is easier and probably cheaper .
