Default Don't need gear puller for 5th or 6th gear....

Is there something wrong in the fact that I didn't need a gear puller to remove any other the gears in the tail section of the transmission?

Also, I' looking at the 5th gear itself and the nubs on it are not pointed (slightly rounded)....this isn't right too, correct?

Thanks.

I kind of am, but I also wonder

I haven't had to use a puller yet. The speedo was the hardest, but that wasn't hard either.

Maybe I'm just too strong.....

FWIW, I've found that the older the transmission is, the easier it is to get the 5/6 driven gear off the mainshaft. The older LT1 T56's can usually pull off by hand, the LS1s are hit/miss. The newer CTS-V/GTO/C5 boxes require a puller and patience.

Since I've seen a few LT1 boxes shear off the splines between mainshaft and 5/6, I think Tremec has been increasing tolerances on them for strength..

It all depends on how much wear is in between the splines of the gear and the mainshaft . As the gear and mainshaft wear , the gear slides off easier which is good sometimes . A little wear will not hurt anything but once it gets excessive , the parts need to be changed . Chances are your stuff is ok but take a look at the splines inside the gear and on the main shaft . If the splines look like at least 50% of the material is there , its probably ok to reuse it . Once the splines start to get thinner , its time to replace the mainshaft and 5-6 gear . Eventually they will strip and you will lose 5 and 6 gear completely .

He was asking about the gears not the driven gear as that is how I ready it. It is fine that the gears came out all you have to do is tug on them. Only the driven gear requires a puller sometimes.

Thanks,
Amber

He asked if there was something wrong because he did not need a gear puller to remove any of the gears in the rear section . The only gear you ever need a puller for it the main drive gear on the main shaft . I assumed any gear meaning just that , any gear .

That's what I meant. Amber was really nice and talked to me about my transmission issues.

Yes....when I said any gear I literally meant ANY gear.

Be thankful. Sometimes you have to do everything except throw them off a cliff to get them off.

Don't worry....I still suffered.

Funny thing....I spent the time making up a large puller right before trying to remove the gear. I used a powered hand drill.

If the gear would have been stuck on there , I doubt a drill would have had enough torque to get it off with a puller . I use a large 2 jar Snap On puller and my dual hammer impact sometimes to get the gear off .

You're all lucky! The last t56 I did broke 2 professional pullers (one 2 jaw, one 3 jaw), broke every tooth off of 5th drive gear trying. Had to cut that damn 5/6 off. Also took heating the new gear and a 15 ton press to get it on. Splines on the main shaft looked absolutely fine......talk about sloppy manufacturing tolerances!!!!

I am not sure how they assemble them from Tremec but I know the after market mainshafts and matching 5/6 gear were super tight going back together . I would spin the main shaft on a lathe and polish it out some .

Well...I have to replace the 5/6 driven set Splines were rounded off too much.

After talking with Amber and showing her picture she feels that that the whole mainshaft needs to be replaced.

Post a picture of the mainshaft as well as the inside of the gear if you would like my opinion on it .
