Default Illinois car buying info needed

Hey guys,

I'm selling my 96 WRX and one of my friends from Illinois is interested in it. The only thing is he's never bought a car from out-of-state before. I would assume he would have to take it by a state police post to have them check it out and have them sign off on it. Is there anything else he would need to do before going to get it registered? Thanks in advance!

Drew

He does not need to take it to the state police, just needs to take the title to a Secretary of State facility and pay the fees

It's a 96 with a 95 motor, thus no OBD port. Would he still need the plug n test?

then he can't register it where they have emissions testing because no obd port automatically means he fails the test and can't get plates renewed.

You can still register the car in places where they do emisions http://www.epa.state.il.us/air/vim/faq/types.html talks about what you must do with cars with out ob2

I was talking with one of my auto teachers at JJC and you may not have to test it if it is 96 or older I dont know for sure though.

don't tell him that crap. it IS an obd2 car, therefore it must have the obd2 port to test for emissions. if it was a 95 car he'd be fine, but it's not and he can't pass then.

Sorry i was assuming the car was built in 95 but called a 96 like the half year modles do some have 0bd2 and some dont and all are built in 95 just call some 96. But correct if it is not them oem engine that came that year you will need to have somone to title it for you that is in a county that does not require testing.

If it is a 96 VIN # registered in cook county zip code it will be required to pass an OBD-II emission test.
No OBD port=fail.
There are some special exclusions, if he where to provide special insurance & file w/ IEPA as a show or race car he can get an exemption. But he would have to renew the paperwork every 2 years when the VIN comes up for testing again.
The link to IEPA air team above can provide alot of the info needed to get this done.

Where did you see a show plate? The only one I saw was a antique plate and the car has to be 25years old
