Default I CAN'T DECIDE: To Cam or not to Cam

I'm going in this year to get headers and an intake.

I want to get new heads next year.

Should I get a cam this year or next year???

I want to only do this once, so the cam needs to work for both set ups.

I'm looking at 231/237 with close to .600 lift on a 112 LSA. I would get the CC918 springs with it for this year and buy the heads with dual valve springs next year.

Should I get the cam now or put it on with the heads next year?

I would do the headers/cam/heads all in the same day, reason for that you have to take the headers off anyway. That and the intake so forth. just start from the block up. It would be alot easier

Are you doing it yourself or paying someone to do it?

I'm having it done by someone else.

If I don't have the option to do the heads this year, what would you do?

Are you saying to wait until next year to do the cam?

I can't wait so I would install the cam now and the heads later. Might as well enjoy this summer some.

Good. I was hoping someone would think it's O.K. Now I just need to convince the wife!

Anyone else?

I had an LS1 that was cam only for a long time. I'll probably be doing that again with my GTO. You will save on labor doing it all at once, but the bill might be too big for the wife to let it slide. $1200 here or there and she might not care...but $4k all at once, you might be sleeping in the car.

I wouldn't wait. I've never had any patience and always sucked at saving, too.

You hit the nail on the head about sleeping in the car, just as we're looking for a house. Unfortunatly, with the headers (kooks), intake, cam (springs, chain, pump, push rods), and tune it will be a little more than $1200

Ah I forgot about the headers. Tell her they increase gas mileage.

Her dad is a car nut, I don't think she'll buy that. She has the car she's always wanted as a child and it has some routine up keep expenses, so I think she will understand.

I agree if you can afford the extra labor b/c life is just to darn short and maybe the cam only performance will make you realize the stock heads flow pretty darn good!

ideally wouldn't you want a different cam for the heads later on? get one now and then sell it later and buy a new one when you do the heads. only a few hundred and you sell the old one with a year on it and make some money back.

I'm trying to break it up into 2 steps to eliminate one large expense. If I change the cam next year, I won't be saving on labor.

I would not use 918s on that cam. I would go duals, but that's just me. Too close to the limit of the 918s. Nothing like valve float on a new setup and having to change springs again.

Ask me how I know.

Learn how to do it yourself, I did, alot of trial and error, but the members here helpled walk me threw it, and I'll be doing another swap with my 2000 this month(March) best to do everything all at once, I speak from previous experience, my 98 I tore down and put together just to many times, this time around, once and I'm done with all my mods. Hope this helps you decision. DoubleK
