Default How did you tell your family you were joining the military ?

Well if you have read any of my recent threads I am currently studying for the ASVAB which i will be taking soon then I plan on signing with the marines. I have yet to say anything to my family. So just wondering how did you tell your loved ones about your decision ?

btw Im planing on signing before I tell them (good idea or bad idea)?

bad idea though on the sign then tell them honestly talk to alot of people about what branch to join. if you like being home and in the states go USCG if you like sea go certain rates in the USCG bm,dc,mk,et,em,fs,sk, or navy if you wanna stay on land go aviation in the USCG. if you like the air overseas go USAF if you like the sandbox and never see what home is for atleast 5-098734902902840928402938409 years go USA or USMC i believe thats a quick rundown of the overall branches. i will prolly have a million marines come in here and tell me how smart they are and how they never have to go overseas (BULLSHIT) and army guys saying they are better then everyone. lol they all have their own plusses but i have about 10 guys on my unit that have switched to USCG from every other branch and they say the CG is the best they really really help you and do what makes YOU happy not what makes the branch happy. just my .02$

No... you misunderstood he said the Military not the Yachting club. Just kidding seen some of the crazy stuff the coasties do every branch has thier thing they do best. I just got both of them together, told them I had something to tell them and told them I was leaving for Boot in a week. They can say whatever they want it's your life and career part of growing up.

All the men in my family served in the infantry, it's tradition. So it was a given for me. Didn't want to be the family wussboy. But I'm the only one who made a career of it. Still not sure how that happened lol

I was 17 when I joined and had to have parental consent. I took the form home and said "I need you guys to sign this." My dad took one look and almost killed me trying to get to the pen. My mom said she wouldn't sign it until she read everything. She signed it about 15 minutes later. 21 years later I'm getting ready to retire.

I just told them one day at dinner that i was thinking of joining the AF, a week later the recruiter came to my house and talked to them, a week later they signed the "under 18" consent form, and off I went. 10 months after I had left for basic, Sept 11 happened and they regretted signing the papers. They are over it now though.

I just told mine what i was doing and I was gonna do it soon.

My cousin though, signed up for ROTC for the Army just so he could get his current schooling paid for, without telling me. Personally, I thought there was better choices out there. Cuz I think he could of gotten that paid for in other ways. I'm not bashing the Army either...i just thought there were better alternatives out there. I don't think he got a signing bonus either, but im not sure how it all works

Mine knew it was coming eventually, just a matter of when. I had a great paying job and all that junk but I've always wanted to be in the military. Came home with the paperwork and put it on the counter and told them I was joining the Air Force. They asked me if I was really sure and after that it was history.
