Am I an OIF/OEF Vet?
Lets see who knows their regs..
I was in from FEB 2003 - OCT 08 and was deployed twice.. I've got OIF and OEF stickers and don't want to put them on my truck because I'm fairly certain that I am not an OIF/OEF Veteran. From what I understand, these were two operations where you were supposed to be in direct support of OIF/OEF and stationed in either Afghan or Iraq between certain time frames.. BUT I DID serve in direct support, mission support group, for both of these from NOV 04 - FEB 05 in Qatar. And another I was deployed to Bagram, Kandahar and Kuwait from DEC 05 - JUN 06 and was awarded the Afghan Campaign Metal for that.
I have tried searching the net about this but haven't found any dates or locations.
-=Side note=-
Where do you guys get the MIL Sic pics made??

Hmmmm. It seems that since you were deployed to Afghanistan after 7OCT2001, you are at least an OEF vet. It is tough to say about the Qatar one though. Usually your mobilization orders would say that you were deployed in support of OIF, however, in your case, I am not completely sure.

I agree that you have you are a vet. However what does your DD214 show the Afghan Campaign Metal on it? That DD214 is the end all be all of documentation once you are out as I've discovered. Its what everyone outside the military uses to "prove" that you are a vet. So if the DD214 shows that ACM on it then you are good to go. Unfortunately, its not what we know to be true but what's documented that seems to count (at least in this case).
Good luck.
Good luck.

What is a Veteran?
A veteran is defined by federal law, moral code and military service as "Any, Any, Any"... A military veteran is Any person who served for Any length of time in Any military service branch. [See #1 and #2, below]
ALL VETERANS ARE EQUAL
What is a War Veteran?
A war veteran is any GI (Government Issue) ordered to foreign soil or waters to participate in direct or support activity against an enemy. The operant condition: Any GI sent in harm's way.
What is a Combat Veteran?
A combat veteran is any GI who experiences any level of hostility for any duration resulting from offensive, defensive or friendly fire military action involving a real or perceived enemy in any pre- or post-designated theater of combat (war) operations. [See #3, below]
NOTE:
1. Veteran's benefits are based on Congressional regulations determined by Honorable Discharge or Under Honorable Conditions status.
2. Retirees (either 20+ years service or medical discharge status) are also Veterans. Retirees are usually eligible for supplementary federal benefits, privileges and access on military installations, but not necessarily all VA services (some services are maintained by the former military branch), as regulated by Congress.
3. Wartime medals define various levels of individual combat involvement, sacrifice and/or valor.
4. (Ret.) or (Retired) may be used by any veteran when stating or publishing his or her rank to indicate they are not on the active list.
that should about sum it up for you. btw neither conflict was/is a Formal declaration of War.

^ I know I'm a vet, just wasn't sure if I have the right to claim that I am an OIF/OEF operations veteran. I just won't feel right claiming I was doing something when people have lost their lives doing so. -So to speak.. It just doesn't sit right with me.
Yeah.. i remember them saying "In drect support to OIF/OEF missions.
I'll have to check. I've got my old EPR's printed out.. I printed EVERYTHING off VMPF before I separated.

OEF yes, but you are techically not an OIF vet...since you do not have the OIF campaine ribbon. to be an OIF vet you would have to be stationed in Iraq for a given time. since you where in Qatar, you got the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.
you may have supported OIF Missions, but you were not in "direct" support. I was at Bagram, and it would be like me saying i am an OIF vet because the planes i brief flew to Iraq.
OIF Campaign Medal:
The Iraq Campaign Medal became available for general distribution in June 2005. The decoration is awarded to any member of the U.S. military who has performed duty within the borders of Iraq (or its territorial waters) for a period of thirty consecutive days or sixty non-consecutive days. The medal is retroactive to March 19, 2003 and is active until a date to be determined. Personnel who have been engaged in combat with an enemy force, or personnel who have been wounded in combat or wounded as a result of a terrorist attack within Iraq, may receive the Iraq Campaign Medal regardless of the number of days spent within the country. The medal is also awarded posthumously to any service member who dies in the line of duty within Iraq, including from non-combat injuries such as accidents and mishaps.
The Iraq Campaign Medal may be awarded with the Arrowhead device for qualified soldiers. The Iraq Campaign Medal may be awarded with the combat operation insignia for qualified sailors assigned to Marine Corps units. The following are the established combat campaigns authorized for service stars to the Iraq Campaign Medal.
Liberation of Iraq – March 19, 2003, to May 1, 2003.
Transition of Iraq – May 2, 2003, to June 28, 2004.
Iraqi Governance – June 29, 2004, to December 15, 2005.
National Resolution – December 16, 2005, to January 9, 2007.
The Surge - January 10, 2007, to December 31, 2008.
Iraqi Sovereignty - January 1, 2009 to August 31, 2010
New Dawn- September 1, 2010- To Be Determined.

OEF/OIF Vet
I'm an OIF Vet, but deployed to ARFOR-T (Mardin, Turkey on the Iraqi/Syrian border). As long as you received a combat patch w/orders along with your campaign medals w/orders you're gtg!
