He was my Father-in-Laws Drill Instructor when he was drafted for Vietnam. Always funny to see him come on for a show or commercial and watch him get flicked off by him.

Because, and despite having to justify our existence, for over 235 years, we have had to prove just how much better we are than the Army. In Bootcamp, accidentally calling a DI a drill Sgt not only got your *** thrashed on the quarter deck, but an appointment with the Co 1stSgt concerning your disrespect towards a SNCO. I personally saw more than one recruit get dropped to the next company for calling a DI a drill Sgt.
Plus, until you complete Bootcamp and earn the title of Marine, you cannot and will not refer to a Marine with any term other than Sir... and certainly not his/her rank.

The public will recognize the term Drill Sgt more than Drill Instructor. Hell, drill instructor could be a high school band.
^That's pretty true for I would assume all branches. At AF BMT, I saw a trainee get hell by calling another MTI just a TI, to another MTI.
