Ya my boss man said that's what happened to him. And he is skinny as hell.

The longer you hide (if you are good at it ie the longer it takes them to find you) the harder they are on you. I know a guy that went to the one in Panama or whatever and one that went to Italy.
Both of them said they cried like little girls and wanted to die, one is a SEAL and the other was ARMY SF....... I am not going to say anything else just because I doubt you would beleive me and you just have to find out.
You have no idea...... but you will find out....
Also don't confuse AF basic survival school with SERE.... SERE is not something you ask to go to, you only want to be forced to go.
SERE takes people from all services, if you are Spec ops, SF, SEAL, RECON, ect ect you are pretty much forced to go, you can ask to go but have ben told those people are not right in the head lol. Its not just one branch.

I'd recommend not getting caught. Don't break the rules to not get caught, but the longer you are out of their grasp the less time you spend. It's a limited amount of time so fewer hours captive = better. Again be careful what you hear. The instructors will tailor the experience based on how you are doing and if they see you acting as though you've been tipped off they will make it more "unpleasant."
BTW the one in San Diego sucks in the winter. It gets damn cold.
