I was a 2E1X1 (Satellite Communications) until I got out in August. It was a pretty fun job except for being in a Combat Communications Group

WOW! But you did say 10 months out of the year with tax free and hostile fire pay. Does this translate to plenty of TDY time? Poo. That sounds really awesome though.

If you couldn't cross-train, you could apply for an Instructor position at a FTD if you're an E-5 or better. It's a 5-year gig now. Easy-going schedule, no deployments for the most part, and plenty of time to go to school.

Find a job that allows plenty of time to go to school. Thats why I went from 2A352 F-16 Avionics to being a training manager 3S271. I now have plenty of time for school, finished my bach degree and about to start my masters.

If you got good EPRs, a decent ASVAB score, and can pass a college entrance exam...then I got three letters for you:

O S I

the devil fits in well behind your three letters... is it OSI that covers the special agent jobs doing security for the generals, or is that another special duty?

A good cross training job is a job that you will be able to use as a civilian. The years that you have in the military will help you with the experience you 'll need when you get out. use your head when you decide. Weapons loading.... not much out civilian wise. Computor programing....$$$$$$. Just some examples. And I'm not trying to bash anyone. Just try to set yourself up for when you get out. I'm a crew chief with an A&P lic. I can work on commerial jets when I get out.
Choose wisely

Exactly..... We go on 14 day trips, we never deploy (IE no tent city ever) and we make on average $85 dollars per day per diem wherever we go... I haven't seen 3.50 a day since 2001..... when i wasn't a loadmaster.... and the hostile fire tax free program is the ****... I land for three hours and quickturn the **** out of balad/baghdad and collect the same amount as a grunt that is walking the streets of baghdad... don't get me wrong I have nothing but respect for ANYONE in the army that patrols that hellhole but flying in there and out of there in a gigantic building with wings with "please shoot me" on the side is plenty dangerous enough for me....

As far as TDY time yeah I go TDY a lot, since my job is to fly airplanes and deliver cargo... but i'm home after 10-14 days and get to see my family before going back out..... I'd say I average about 180-220 days a year TDY.... but that's split up into two week periods... i fly about once a month. sometimes twice....

Right now I'm on that NCORP maditory cross training list. I have submited all my papper work and I'm cool if I get a job or not. The main one I put in for was fire protection. I also just submitted for a MTL position at Lackland. I like San Antonio so it would be cool to be stationed there. I should find out something in the next month or 3 weeks or so. PRAY FOR ME!!!
Just came accross this thread and forgot about my post...I found out in Jan that I got approved for fire fighter....I CANT ******* WAIT!!! I go to tech in early Aug...WOO HOO

Congrats dude...ARFF is cool stuff with lots of cool toys. When I asked an Instructor Pilot about declaring an emergency one time his answer was : "AF Firefighters do 3 things in life- 1. They wash and wax the trucks. 2. They drive the trucks with all the lights on. 3. They play X-Box in the firehouse until the alarm goes off. Given the choice, they would much rather do #2 than all the others...so why not make their day and declare an emergency?"
