army guys..
Got a question.. buddy of mine (i think he EAS in 09 or 2010 I am not 100%) is saying that he should be an E-6 by the time his first 4 are up (and then he'd re-enlist)... I was just wondering if that was possible? Hes infantry, hes still an E2 or E3, and he said hes "fast tracking" (but somehow all his stories are about him not listening to people such as not standing at parade rest.. hah definitely won't get you far here...). . I can't imagine someone being a SSgt (Marine corps) in 4 years... let alone we've had most hit their 4 years as a lance corporal or a corporal.
Just wanted some insight on your branch and the way all that works??

i have heard that the Army promotes quick because they require you to hold the proper rank for billets. where as i sign into a logbook as a Roundhouse NCO as a PFC.

It depends on your MOS, time in grade, and of course if there is a slot for you to be promoted into. Its possible but not likely, He might get E-5 by the time he gets out but he needs to start makeing freinds and stop slacking off.

I dont think it is possible although the Army did just change their promotion scheme a little while back to make for faster promotions. But even with all that I dont think you can make 6 that quickly, that would make for a lot of waivers. He can make E-5 in 4 years! I am in no way bragging but I made E-6 in 6 years and that was fast tracking I dont know to many people who made it that fast never mind in less than 6 years.

Well, he's infantry. Promotion points are low as **** for us. When I went to the board for E-5 I think they were at 390 or so. Needless to say I had enough points for E-6 after the board. It's very possible, but quite a bit of it has to do with luck and being in the right place at the right time.

I believe they promote faster for 11 series in the Army because of the lack of retention rate. When I was in 93-96, it didn't seem like anyone re-enlisted. I was an 19d cav scout in a infantry bat and out of the three years maybe a handful of people in my platoon re-uped in those three years. It left alot of open slots to be had.

E6 in 4 years is very possible, although it is not the norm. It all really depends on your supervisors and yourself. Some NCO's just do not believe that you should be promoted early no matter what, even if you are superior to everyone else. I had every outstanding award you could get(Soldier of the year, 300+ APFT, 38 out of 40 Weapin qual, etc...) yet i still did not see the promotion board till i hit 3 years. I believe I should have been boarded at 2-2.5 years. I had others tell me if I was their soldier i would have been boarded for E5 at 2 years. It all fell on my supervisor who also thought higly of me but didnt send me to the board, and then i moved sections and went immediatly to the board. E5 and E6 promotion is the Army is straigh B.S anyway, the process sucks and IMO is unfair.

Did the Army change the number of waivers you can use for rapid promotion? Cause it used to be only 2 and you would have used them for TIS and TIG to make E-5 in 2 years. Not trying to argue I am just curious.

I sort of agree, no matter how good your PFT or weapons qual is some things you just don't get until having some time in grade, and when we have 4+ year lance corporals (just because the mos has been closed or up in the 17--+ range) i don't see how that would mix good with a sub 4 yr ssgt. just not enough time in service

It's very possible. I came in 92 as a E-1 and I had a old school SGT. He trained me to set the standard and not be the standard. I made SSG in 4 1/2 years. I knew battle focus traning, training the force, Leadership in my sleep. although I didn't have the experience I surely surpassed my peers with knowledge. Any way a long story short. I made my E-7 in 8 years. I'm up for E-8 now with 13 yrs in.
It doesnt' matter what MOS you are if you can max it like I did. I had 798.
But I will say at my first board a CSM kicked me out because he said i was to young for my E-5, and by regulation i was back standing in front of him in 90 days.
NCO'S LEAD THE WAY!!!!!

yup, its very possible...espeacially for us combat arms guys..
i came in in 97 as a PVT/E-1
made SGT in 22 months
at 31 months i went to the SSG board, and had to wait until i hit 48 months to Pin SSG
I made SFC in 7 years
will get looked at with a VERY high chance of promotion to MSG next year..
i have 28 months Platoon Sergeant time and 8 months 1SG time..

Stats are one thing, passing a board is another, but being a leader...It's a hard quality to judge on paper. Maybe your old NCO saw something missing in you that you had to develope and experience was the only way to get there.
