paging babyduce or anyone else in usaf
Hey is A.G.E. a good job or is it another high turnover job. I am looking for a job that I will like doing for many years and I can move up in. Here is my deal. I got a H2 level on my hearing so It is hard to find jobs that I will like. I got the H2 hearing level because in my left ear I have a birth defect on my ear drum, the ear specialist called it a cookie bite deformity and it blocks out 500 to 1000 htz on hearing tests, I never noticed it before but I tried to get a waiver and they denied it. At first they said no because they did not want to damage my hearing more, and even after seeing the ear specialist they said it was because I could not hear in the range, I wish there was a way to by-pass this, but my recruiter and I can't figure it out, plus my recruiter is kind of lazy. I wanted eod, but they said I would not beable to hear certain things, that is why I have my right ear, lol. Can you speak into my right ear please. Anyone with suggestions would be great. I want to be around aircraft some how if possible, I would would love to be up in the sky with them. Thanks
Steve

Aerospace Ground Equipment would not be my first choice, but that is just my opinion. AGE takes care of just about all equipment needed to service aircraft. If you are mechanically inclined, it might not be too bad. I have had friends on both sides of the fence, some loved it, others hated it.
I take it you cant do E&E due to the hearing issue?

no, I can do e&e, I can do anything on the ground just not in aircraft i the air and no eod or Sec. Forces. I am just looking for a job that has openings since it is the begining of the year and that I can leave soon. But I do not want to regret the job I picked. Also, I am 27, is it hard to become an officer by the age of 35. I want to somehow do this, and I know some people that did this but were younger and they are liked by enlisted because they were once there and are "usually" not a**holes to them. Please help, you have already done more to help me than my recruiter or anyone else, and it even is not that much, I don't know if anyone just does not take my seriously or just does not care.
Thanks again,
Steve
Thanks again,
Steve

AGE troop here, love the job man. its a whole lot of work. but atleast your not a crew chief working outside in the 140* weather. or in the -10* weather. just giving crew chiefs some ****. if your not mechanically inclined DO NOT pick age thats 85% of our job! 10% is electronics, the other 5% is BS. lol

No, I am very mechanical inclined, I do all my own auto work and electrical work. I am a good prob. solver and I am good with wiring schematics. I change out my auto for a 6 speed by my self wiring and all, I did not switch wiring harnesses, I ran all new wires to pigtail and re-pinned the ecm. Where are you located and how long have you been in. I read there are only 3 or 4 bases for age.

Well, there you go, input from the AGE folks. Dont just look at aircraft maintenance, look for something you can do on the outside after you retire or do your time and get out. I did Avionics for 8 years, and I was tired of the same old crap day after day. I am on my second special duty, and if I have my way I will do a third. Whatever you choose, make sure it sets you up for the long term, not just the short term.
Look at 4A231 Bio Medical Equip repair(BMET)....good inside job, and there is a demand on the outside

be advised that most jobs in the maintenance career field of the AF will have u working long hours and on the weekends (MOST jobs..not all). but yeah, AGE is just working on the equipment that services the aircraft or the AMMO guys. however, i dont think u'll be workin out on the line too much (other than just picking up equipment and bringing it back to the shop). also, i dont know how AGE does it, but AMMO works weekends as well. if ur more of a family-oriented guy, ur best bet is to stay in a non-maintenance type of career field (i.e. medical/dental, admin, etc.). people in the maintenance field will make fun of u, but they'll be doin that while they work in the blazing heat or freezing cold and ur inside a climate-controlled building.

yeah, as bh said - it mainly depends on where you're at. here at langley - 1st FW (pronounced - worst fighter wing), they like to pull the weekend duty at the last second. at kadena, i dont think i pulled even 1 weekend (unless it was for exercise prep/clean-up). then again, i was in a shop that didnt have a need to come in on the weekend.
ur chances of getting out of weekend work increase significantly when not in the maintenance side of the house.

Yeah I am family oriented but I love to work and get away once in a while. I will figure it out somehow. I looked into the bmet and it looks cool. I need to make up my mind fast and I can't, this is hard to decide. Also, on these admin. type kobs or weather, or bmet, do you get deployed overseas to sad iraq for tours? Because I DO want to experience that.
Thanks

Unfortunetely, damn near all career fields deploy to the middle east, or wherever needed. You are about to join the military, get accustomed to the idea of deploying, it will happen. Deployments can be a blast, and a good way to make a few extra bucks.
Picking a job is never easy, but you have to do your homework. BMET is a hard field to get into, but it is worth the effort.

Just remember to wear your hearing protection when you're working around those big diesel generators. The newer ones were pretty quiet, but the old Hobarts are still out there.
