It's a shame. There should ALWAYS be a Z/28 as long as there are Camaros in production. The ZL1 is a sacred badge, and GM is ONCE AGAIN (as they did with SS) defacing the value of this badge!

then the z28 /z28rs kinda deal
up untill the 4th gens, the z28 was always meaner then the SS, granted the 375/396 was rated more i do belive the 302 z28 was hugley underrated with lots of info to back theat up now...should be a z28

And then there was the Big Block ZL1 Camaros that were just insane!
The Z/28 was always the road-racing, street performance car.

I don't see the SS badge as being very special when it comes to a Camaro, especially in the 60s and 70s were the Z28 is MUCH more sought after these days. I do think using the ZL1 badge on this current Camaro is stupid.

that's just what i found when i looked up e/t of 69' camaros.....i've always heard that ALL of them were underrated, seems like i seen a dyno on tv one time where a DZ302 did like 390hp at the flywheel in stock trim.....i know the SS 396's were torque monsters, the Yenko 427's were even stouter

I think it's a good thing they used this badge instead of the Z-28 for this particular car. The Z-28 has (and should always be ) a stripped of all non-performance items and yet loaded with performance options as a track ready version.
I'm hoping they are holding off on the Z-28 for the Alpha platform, it will be smaller, lighter and more taught. They will also have the 475hp DI 5.5L Gen V engine by then, so that should go into it. Then add T6060 trans with the new corvette launch control/no lift shift/auto rev matching/ competition traction control system, adjustable Koni's or magnetic shocks, adjustable coil-overs, adjustable sway bars, ZR1 carbon metallic brakes (steel brake brembo optional), Corvette traction control system, CF panels, stripped of all power options, no sunroof, no huge stereo, no redundant steering wheel buttons, lightweight seats, etc. Oh and under 3400lbs

These numbers were before the headers/cross-ram intake/etc. that came in the trunk of the Z from the factory were installed
