Default Pontiac G8 GT vs. BMW 550i

Another Pontiac ad. I'm not sure if it's a repost or not. I haven't seen this one before so I thought I'd share it. It's not as good as the Spy Hunter commercial but oh well.

LOL anybody with the dough to buy a 550 won't even venture to the Pontiac dealership to realize it exists.

G8 is cool, but not even close to 5 series territory. The 550 may be twice as much, but the G8s not even built half as well LOL.

Funny ad. I like G8s but they aren't going to pull anybody away from the BMW dealerships.

I doubt the build quality difference is all that high. BMW's aren't that great, in either build quality, OR (especially) reliability. They just have a rep that won't die.

That said, you're right, Pontiac is not going to compete against BMW. Caddy, yes, and that's where the CTS and STS are going. The G8 will compete against the false-charger and the 300C (and to a lesser extent, even the new Taurus and Fusion), as well as the toyota GS and nissan G35 sedan.

maybe not people who where looking at a 5-series, but it's going to pull people who may be looking at a 3-series. The price point for the two is very similiar at the level. The G8 is 335i power and speed at a 328i price. I have a 2006 330i and the interior while nice, it's not exactly luxury.

I'd much rather a 335I over a G8 and i'm sure a lot of people agree

As far as agreeing it depends on the type of person. For people who are badge ****** and just want to be seen behind the wheel of a BMW, yes. For people who are a "car" people and want the best value for their buck, not so much. It's very hard for me to say that the 335i is a 10-15K better car then the G8 and remember I'm a BMW owner and think BMW builds great driving cars.

If all you have is 328i money but like the idea of 335i power and the space of a 5-series, the G8 becomes an appealing alternative.

Well given that the G8 which is based on the Holden Commodore that took 1 billion dollars and over 6 years to develop to make it danm near perfect , and given that ive sat in and driven one id have to say... sir you wrong i bet the pontiac comes with in a hair split as far as build quality is concerned to the BMW if not better. Especially considering my aunt has one and has had to make several trips for constant problems with the car.... im sure the BMW IS SO MUCH BETTER...and i say that with sarcasm.

Quite a few Lexus and Acura buyers have bought Hyundai's Veracruz. But I can say very few who have the money and desire to buy a 540i are going to even contemplate Pontiac anything.

No way I'd get a g8 over the 335I but, if you throw a 2005 m3 e46 in the mix I might tell you a different answer.

It may not pull people from buying a BMW but look at it like this: Here on our GM forums we have fun pokein at other manufacturers products. It makes us feel good even if the other has a product that is faster or more betterer. Like the 03-04 cobra. We all know its faster stock to stock but we still try to defend the GM cars and hype up the good parts on ours. Thats all Pontiac is doing. Makin a person that is lookin for a car think, Humm that G8 is Gr8.

Most of the people on here would choose a G8 over a 550 if its thier own money they are spending. I mean how many people around here wanna pay 2x as much for a car that might feel sturdier but is a lil bitch for performance?

G8 4TW

John

Your high if you believe that. I work for Mercedes as a Technician and i will tell you there is more thought and build quality in one of our door's then there is in most of that G8. BMW is very similar to a Mercedes. Trust me i love my Gm Vettes, Trans Am's and Camaro's. But as far as overall package high line cars like Bmw and Mercedes are on a whole different level as far as quality and engineering go. Plus I worked at Disney as a valet for a couple years and have driven a lot of cars so i can speak from first hand experience in quality from ride to interior features, etc.

I'd buy a G8 over a BMW. Why you ask? I am comfortable with a car that is cheeper. May not be on the grand scheme as a BMW or Benz(which I have driven and plenty of rides from my time stationed in Germany). There are so many different playing fields, stereotypes out there. People say working on a 4th Gen Ls car is a pain, to me after a mess load of plug changes and other mods, it just another thing. Same goes for Benz and BMW, just ppl are scared of what they don't know. But if I can save a ton of money for a great family car, that appeals to ME. Well then I am sold.

Funny commercial...

And to help your debate I present....... http://youtube.com/watch?v=c-xRvDpVtfw

Close enough to a G8.

The end of the clip pisses me off when the test the car in the rain, and say "its still slower than anything built from europe."

A Holden is a far cry from an F-Body. Even the Euro's gripe about M-B quality and how it dropped way too far. M-B even acknowledged that and are trying to recover from it. But this was about BMW, not M-B.

I don't expect you, or anyone else to believe it, it just proves what I said about the mind set. Your comment is exactly the same thing said by japanese car lovers btw.
