A "regular" camaro is always a V6. Totally different animal than an SS or Z28. An SS or Z28 is always a V8. Regular camaro has relatively same appearance as a Z28 (interior/exterior options). But everything performance related is different.

V6 & V8 Camaros use the same brakes and rear ends. (except early 4th gen V6's that had drum rears). Gear ratios do change in the rears depending on displacement and transmission.

98-02, SS's always have 3.23's (A4) & 3.42's with M6 and have better flowing exhaust.

the only difference, besides the obvious cosmetic differences between an SS and a Z28, ive noticed is the attitude of the SS drivers. i know not all of them are this way, but around here, the guys who drive SS's think their car is so much better than my Z.

SS's are Z28's with a hood, spoiler and 17" wheels, they have the Z28 RPO code too

Hey I am in Texas too and just bought an SS and was wondering the same thing... Thanks, new question though. How the hell do you get away with LT's and no cats?

Yes, they do.

Exhaust, suspension, hood, spoiler, badges, lid (I think), and wheels are the only differences.

SS's are Z28's, they're technically a "SS Z28". Whoopie.

SS's have the same suspension unless equipped with the 1LE option, which netted you koni shocks and a few other goodies. Z28's could also be equipped with the 1LE option.

Biggest difference is hood, spoiler, badges, body colored mirrors, muffler, exhaust tips, and wheels/tires. Z28s had 16x8 wheels with 245/50/R16 tires, SS had 17x9.5" wheels with 275/40/R17's. Look for peeling chrome on the 10 spoke SS wheels as well, the older 5 spoke design seems to hold up better.

SS could have different suspensions if equipped: SLP Bilstien or SLP 1LE
Different exhaust could be had as well, the GM SS received an exhaust similar to the WS6 style, while SLP cars could get the Dual/Dual setup or CME (both are the same exhaust) which flows better (1998 had a single tip version). 2002 model SS could also get the blackwing lid to put the rated HP at 345. All SS went to SLP for the hood and spoiler, they were equipped from GM with silver 10-spokes and temporary Camaro hoods/spoilers.

This is the typical Z28 owner attitude towards SS, just read this thread. It comes from ignorance, as the SS has always been an appearance option and fully loaded, while the Z28 was the entry level performance model (stripped for racing). Most SS owners have nothing against Z28 owners, I own a Z28 and two SS personally. Yes, the Z28 is the race car, while the SS are daily drivers.
