Default TR55's vs platinum plugs?

I had an ASE cert. mechanic tell me today that the TR55 plug isn't as "good" or "made for the car" as a plug made with platinum. He said the NGKs would burn up or have the potential to foul soon (a.k.a. around 30k miles) compared to plugs made with platinum that would last nearly 80k-100k miles... What's this all about?

Your mechanic doesn't know much about spark plugs. The material used has nothing to do with fouling. That is related to plug temperature. Hotter plugs resist fouling better than colder plugs. The material determines how long the plug will last:

Iridium>Platinum>Copper

Iridium has been used for years in industrial applications, but wasn't used in cars until recently because they were too expensive to manufacture. So, platinum was used.

Find a new mechanic.

TR55's are copper and will will wear out before iradium or platinum because it is a softer metal. Fouling out and wearing out are two different things.

So are the NGK TR55's copper or iridium?

Regardless, did I do the right thing? And I say again, I DO change them every30k miles along with the other tune-up requiremements REGARDLESS of the plug material or brand

TR55's are copper which is why they are so cheap like $2.50 ea. or less. NGK makes an iridian version but they are in the neighborhood of $10.00ea.

Since price came right up. I got Delco Iridiums which are the stockers for 4 bucks a piece.

I say well worth it for the iridiums. . . .

Non, iridiums are alright too though.

Was it at autozone by any chance? They will tell you to ONLY put acdelcos in chevys, and ONLY motorcraft in fords, ONLY bosch in german cars and ngks ONLY in japs.

I feel its all BS. NGKs work great and I change my plugs very often, I wont switch to iridiuums any time soonbut for 3x as much they should be better.

I offer a great deal on plugs and wires or just plugs.
Iridiums from me are $70 delivered or $124 with MSD 8.5mm wires or TR55's with MSD for $66. If you can find a better price I'll beat it.

The iridiums are a long lasting plug. I sell 50 sets of tr55's or tr6's to one set of iridiums. They are expensive, even at my prices.

So the iridiums don't offer any advantages aside from longevity?

None at all, you just dont have to change them as much. The copper tr55 is a great plug and works very will in these cars.

I went and got plugs the other day at advanced, the guy said they don't make the TR55 anymore they went to a TR5 are they the same plugs?

I never had a problem with the tr55 and won't steer away from them good plugs. I normally change them about every 30k or after track events.

I never got a chance to thank you for the plugs and wires. Great product and it looks great in the engine bay, plus they performs well. Thanks again.
