2001/2002 LS1 change...EGR removal?
I'm sorry if this has already been talked about, i'm having a hard time using the search...it's not working for me...
I am a potential owner of a 2000 LS1 trans am ws6, so i've been doing a little researching. I've read about the intake change on the 2001/2002 models, which resulted in a EGR removal. what does the new intake and EGR removal really accomplish?
Is this a big enough reason to look for a 2001/2002 T/A instead of the 2000?
is there a way to do this myself once i get the car, and how much would that cost?
thanks in advance for your help

I have a 2000 T/A as well, and actually just did a LS6 intake swap last week. I got one new for $350, and it took about 3 hours for me to install it my first time.
The LS6 intake flows a lot better = more power. The 01 and 02's have a smaller cam since the LS6 intake has no provisions for EGR.

did you keep the EGR? i've read you have to do some computer stuff or whatever if you remove the EGR...sounds complicated!
can someone also explain why having the new intake allowed the removal of EGR?

I did not keep EGR. The "computer stuff" involved is simply tuning out the codes that will go off for the EGR system failing (not being there any more). If you can live with a SES light, you don't need to be in a hurry to get the codes erased. Since the 01-02 cars come equipped from the factory with the LS6 intake (which has no provisions for EGR), they used a smaller camshaft, so EGR was no longer required to meet emissions.
I think SLP makes an LS6 intake that has EGR provisions. So if your area has strict emissions, look into that.

you are a lot of help, thanks a lot!
are there any other differences btwn 2000/earlier T/A vs 2001/2002?
on a side note...the one im looking at has 89,000 miles...coupe, manual 6 speed. haven't seen it in person yet, will do that soon...what kind of maintenance might it require? i've read about replacing the rear with a 9 inch, but no one really has mentioned much else. probably the clutch. possibly tires. what else?

nah, if you find a good condition 98-00 then go for it, the differences are not worth worrying about, you can just slap a new intake on there, take off the egr, and get it tuned and it'll be faster than a 01-02 since it has the bigger cam.
