Re: whats faster 6 speed of auto
go research the fastest lists, any class. autos without big convertors are dogs. and can a person shift as fast and as consistent as a computer (and shift kits) the top 100 lists will tell ya!

Re: whats faster 6 speed of auto
stock the Manuals are faster (without major driver error).
With a high stall TC the auto becomes faster. Last time I checked the top 1/4 mile times here there was only one manual in the top 20. Autos are definatly rulers at the track once they are stalled properly and get proper tires.

All else being equal, an M6 doesn't stand a chance in a drag race against an A4 with a big stall.
Bottom line, all else being equal is a tricky proposition to claim. Suffice it to say, A4 for drag, M6 for all other racing.

Re: whats faster 6 speed of auto
me and a friend "who drives a mustang" are arguing about which cars are faster at the track a manual or an auto with a stall. please solve the dispute.
The thing is your friend drives a mustang and Ford auto
transmissions suck! No matter what you do to a Ford auto trans the 5spd will be quicker. Total opposite for GM cars

Re: whats faster 6 speed of auto
all things being equal is probably referring to motor, suspsension, and tires. also autos rarely need as much sticky tire as manuals do.
also i like many other people have gone low 1.5s on stock tq arm. that is the last thing that needs to be upgraded in teh suspension.

When I said "all else being equal", I simply meant, the same weight, same tires, same power, etc.
But, even with 4.10 gears in a 12-bolt rearend, all the best suspension mods, the best racing clutch made, with the best of drivers, an M6 will still have a very difficult time beating an A4 that has stock 3.23 gears in the stock rearend, and stock suspension if it has a TP4400 stall.
It's really not that close of a comparison between an M6 and an A4 at the drag strip...all else being equal. There is, what I would consider to be at least, a fairly consequetial gap in 1/4 mile performance between the two trannys.

Not too good. But that wasn't the question. :p
But, even a 3500 stall will give even a well setup and well driven M6 fits in the 1/4. A 3500 stall is more streetable than the stock converter in some peoples' opinions.

Re: whats faster 6 speed of auto
The reason I asked was for the people that only have 1 nice vehicle and drive/race the same one. So the bottom line is: M6 is better in everything but drag racing. I assume mostly because of driver ability and the fact that an A4 isn't going to miss 3rd.

No, the drag racing part goes alot deeper than than taking the driver out of the picture. It has to do with the fact that an A4 has a serious overall gearing advantage and it has the benefit of TQ mulitiplication from the TQ converter that you don't have with an M6. It also hits the tires softer than dropping a clutch which aids in traction.
The idea of drivability varies from one person to another, but I find an A4 with a 3500 stall to be far more driver friendly as an only car in day to day driving than an manual (I have a couple of both so I'm not biased.) Others would disagree.
