What kind of oil should I put in my 2002 Firebird Formula. It's all stock LS1 right now, but I want a good oil to go in it with the K&N oil filter.

I have an 02ws6 and I've always put a mobil 1 full synthetic and have never had problems. Whatever brand you go with is your choice. But as I'm sure 99% of f-body owners such as us would say stick with full SYNTHETIC

I use German Castrol 0w-30, it seems to be pretty popular...Any oil is better than just leaving it in..

Mobil 1 Full synthetic 10w40 is still very good.

Royal purple has a cult following.
I've heard great things about the GERMAN Castrol as well.

I used nothing but Royal Purple 5W30 on both my LS1 cars. Royal Purple is one of the few true full synthetics.

Personally I run it and its been great. Its been in for about 4 months and 3k miles and its still clear on the dipstick. Ill go to a 5k oil change interval and do a UOA and then go from there.

API certification is a MINIMUM performance benchmark. I've never seen an oil sold at retail that didn't meet the current API spec, all that means is that using that particular oil won't cause your motor to seize up. Thats about all API is good for.

And Walmart oil is GARBAGE. I used it in my motor to flush out any debris from when I dropped the oil pan and pulled the valley cover. Ran it for about 2 days and then drained it and filled it with Mobil 1 EP. Supertech oil even smells like complete crap, its the cheapest oil you can possibly buy for a reason. I noticed my car definitely ran worse with with the Supertech oil, the valvetrain was noisier and the motor just seemed to not perform as well.

Bottom line is all oils are not created equal. You'd be an idiot to buy a high performance engine and then put garbage oil in it. Thats completely counterproductive. For the relatively small price difference per oil change, use full synthetic oil and a quality (not Fram or Walmart) oil filter. I'd highly reccommend Mobil 1, German Castrol Syntec, Valvoline Synpower, and Penzoil Platinum. All will protect your motor at all temperatures, keep it clean inside, and significantly reduce the amount of wear and friction between rotating surfaces.

But if it wasn't good oil, it wouldn't be worth any endorsement deal for GM to use it in their vehicles if it was an inferior product and caused premature wear and failure of engines.

No endorsement deal is worth $15,000 in warranty work per car for a new motor.

If it wasn't good oil they wouldn't be putting it in their brand new high performance cars, period.
