Default Cost of ls cams

This is my first ls1 and like everyone else I can't leave well enough alone. I'm shopping for a cam and was hoping someone could tell me why they are so expensive? Thanks

Are you confusing Cams with "Heads"?
Cams are not THAT expensive. Heads on the other hand.....
Getting it INSTALLED is expensive. Do it yourself and you will save a nice chunk of change.

The cam shouldn't be that expensive. What is your range for expensive? A cam for a ls engine should be dirt cheap compared to a comparable dohc setup.

I guess I'm showing my age, last cam I bought was a Comp. cam sb Chevy about 132.00. Some of the ls cams are 300 to 400 dollars this to me is alot of money. I'm gonna buy one and do it myself. Cam, intake and tune and I'm done. Well maybe...sfc...bigger tires...it never stops. Thanks

cams are around 300-400, springs u must replace and ur looking atleast another 250-300, push rods are 100-200, new ls6 oil pump 100, gm gasket kit 100, and u need the tools to change springs and keep lifters up that 50, and ls2 timing chain is 80. and then at the end of the day u need a dyno tune, about 400-500. then if u decide not to do it urself add another 600-800+, at the end of the day if u do it urself ur looking at about 1300.

You can take that $600 and buy some Hook N' Book, so the cam is worth the $.

Partly because our roller cams are made of billet steel instead of cast like most old school stuff.

You need to compare similar cams first of all. LSx motors use hydraulic roller cams and like Sombitch said they use billet cores. Compare a hydraulic roller retrofit kit for a sbc to the LSx cams. They are not too far off.

yea but the new rectangle port heads like wayy differnt specs than our old cathedral ports, ive seen proven gains with the lg cam and not read one unhappy review from them, where as most other reviews of cams for the ls3 said they were unhappy with the cam and made loww power, so im ok with $100 bigger price tag
