400ci ls1???
Hey guys, I have a 00 SS with about 60k on it. It runs great but i'm ready to dive into the engine now. I'd like to have at least 400ci, 10.5:1, either 225 AFR's or Dart Pro 1's, a cam with about .600 lift and 230 duration, and a fast 90 or 92 setup. It already has pacesetter 1 3/4 lt's, off raod y-pipe, slp cat back, and a slp diablosport predator tuner. My goal is about 500 n/a wheel hp. I'll be driving it on the street and occasional strip, but i'm not too concerned about the street manners. I'd really like to use my stock block to save some money and also maybe buy some used parts on here. My question is how much can bore the stock block? As you know if I go with a
4" stroker crank, all I need is a 4" bore and i'll have a 402, perfect! Another dumb question, but how much machining will the block need for a 4" crank? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

You dont have to machine the block for a 4.00" stroke crank. However you would have to sleeve the block to achieve 4.00+" of bore. Stock ls1 blocks are 3.890 bore.
Your cheapest route would be to buy an iron 6.0 block.

yeah...the biggest you could go on th ls1 block without sleeving is 383.
If you wanted an alumminum 4.00" bore block you could get an ls2 block...that would be a whole lot cheaper than sleeving your stock block.
sleeves = $1900+
ls2 block = $ 700
6.0 iron = $ 250

forged iron block 408, everyone is doing it! im sure you can touch 500 with a 383 setup with a very good cam and head match, but for 250 more dollars why not just get the 6.0
you are going to need a custom tune for that setup.....
not sure what else you have under your car, but a stock rear is going to hate you after this build.

from what you've said...it boils down to this:
stroke the ls1 to 382....only way to get more is new block
go higher than 10.5 compression...11 is still very streetable
any cam in the upper 23x or low 24x will do nicely
AFR 225s would make killer power...if you can afford them...go for it!!!
500rwhp should not be a problem

there is a guy that got his ls1 to 454 ci. i personally would not recommend re sleeving your ls1 block. i heard allot of horror stories about them. the cheapest way would be is to get and lq9 or an lq4 stroke and bore it to whatever ci you want. good luck.

everything should transfer fine.
i think there are a few things that are different, but i know i've looked at the motors in TSP and other vendor's sites...and they offer a pretty cheap conversion kit when going from ls1 --> ls2.
prices are reasonable too.
from TSP for under $4000 starting price
"All Texas Speed & Performance 402 cid stroker short-blocks use new GM LS2 or L76 aluminum blocks! The standard price includes a fully-assembled GM LS2 or L76 short-block with a forged Eagle LS1 4.00" stroke crankshaft with your choice of 24X or 58X reluctor wheel, Eagle H-Beam 6.125" connecting rods with ARP 8740 connecting rod bolts (rated up to 700HP flywheel), Durabond camshaft bearings, and ACL main and rod bearings. The standard price also includes your choice of Wiseco -2cc, -8cc, -10cc, -15cc, or -32cc piston set. Diamond Racing -2cc flat-top, -10cc dished, -15cc dished, or -28cc dished pistons are also available for an additional cost. Any Wiseco pistons offered are built to accommodate most LS1, LS2, LS3, LS6, L92, LS7, and LS9 cylinder heads and valve configuration. Any of our TSP exclusive Diamond Racing 4.010" piston sets already have valve reliefs to accomodate a conventional LS1 cylinder head or the L92 cylinder heads. We build our iron stroker engines with our exclusive Wiseco or Diamond Racing 4.010" bore pistons to allow for additional cylinder cleanup in the future, as well as maximum cylinder wall thickness. Any in-stock stroker will use our 4.010" bore pistons which nets 404 cid, but a 4.005" bore piston is available for no additional charge if you prefer. You do have the option of upgrading to the Eagle H-beam 6.125" connecting rods with ARP 2000 rod bolts for an additional $80, which are rated for up to 900HP flywheel! Other custom build items are available. We also offer Lunati and Callies crankshafts, as well as Lunati, Callies, and Oliver connecting rods. Feel free to give us a call, and we will be more than happy to put an itemized estimate together for you! We also offer additional discounts if you pay via a cashier's check or wire transfer. We do keep many 402/404 LS2/L76 short-blocks in stock and ready to ship! If you purchase one of our in-stock short-blocks, it can ship as soon as the next business day! We do offer an optional conversion package that will include the LS2 timing cover with camshaft position sensor, LS2 valley cover, LS2 lifter trays, LS2-specific timing set, and plug-n-play harness extensions for the camshaft position and knock sensor harnesses. This will be required if you are installing the engine into an LS1 vehicle."
hell for another $100 i think you can go to an aluminum 427 LS3 block. not sure how ls1 style heads work on that though...not up on my ls3 engines yet.

With 400ci you should easily get your 500hp goal. I would go with the TSP kit above. If it had everything you need, it would save you the hassle of searching and finding all the different pieces needed.
