Default Basic Tune Question

Hey guys, Just got a quick question. I have a set of MAC Shorties on my Car now. I believe that the car was tuned, when the previous owner had it. So I had just purchased a set of Hooker Comp LT Headers w/ 3inch Hooker Y-pipe. So my question is when I Install the LT's, do I need to have the car re-tuned or no, since it may have already been in the past??

Sorry if this is a real Newb Question.I'm kind of new to the LS1 crowd. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have driven my car untuned with Pacesetter longtubes for a little over a thousand miles without problem. Although I'm going to get the car tuned in the very near future.

Both my cars ran fine on LT's with even the stock tune but they run even better now!
A4 went from 292HP to 312HP and the M6 went from 327HP to 342HP - TQ jump was even more impressive!
A4 went from 294TQ to 319TQ M6 went from 335TQ to 348TQ
all on the dyno at TSP for $400 a piece. A good tune is never a bad investment!

you don't have to tune it...but then again you don't have to win races either :/ I'd get in good with a tuner. Once you do then maybe they'll hook you up seeing as how everytime you add something the tune will end up needing tweaking.

TSP told me that if i need any changes/tweaks to the tune in the next year - theyll do it for free.

Not too many bolt on guys have tunes. Usually guys have the mentality that (like every LS1 owner) " Since im gonna put a cam and heads (& $5k of other junk) ill wait til then to get it tuned". Two years later, its still just boltons untuned. I smash on every other (95 outa 100) F-bod w the same mods as me. They just dont seem to get it tho.

Out here there are tons of H/C/I - Nitrous - F/I, LS1's around. Truth is tho - that 80 outa 100 stoplights u end up next to another LS1 its a bolt on car at best, and chances are he dosent have a tune.

P.S. Handhelds suck and HP tuners is pretty expensive (not to menton can be time consuming) its up to u tho.

one of the reason's I love my LS1 is that it can pump out some great power and get great gas mileage.

Now, I know tinkering with the well-engineered powertrain often results in a decrease in MPG, but can a tune help soften the blow at the tank?

ill have to go with yes...gears concidered of course. my A4 is getting about 24 city after the tune but i also am still on 2.73 gears (all stock tranny, motor, and rear)

You can drive forever untuned but your gas mileage will go down a bit and you gotta deal with that annoying SES light. i ran mine for 2 years untuned with LT's and had no issues.

with the tune i went from 289hp to 323hp and with open y-pipe it made 340hp on motor and 445 on the bottle. a good tuner does wonders!!!!!!

Lets just put it this way... the healthy addition in power will not result in a loss of mpg's. Maybe make it a fraction better if anything - i never really paid attention to that stuff b4 so i cant really attest to exact mpg's b4 and after. 20 extra ponies adds a lil more lead to your foot for a while too.

Yes, the main reason being that a tune leans out your Air Fuel Ratio. they come from the factory very rich. leaner AFR gives more power and better mpg (effectively increasing the efficiency of the engine.)
